Hey Insane, I'll have to try that.

Well I just reloaded Unreal and RTCW and everything seems to work just fine. When I first got XP about a year ago it would not work, so perhaps SP1a had a few more fixes and made things work.

Anyway, I appreciate everyones input and help.

Thank you.

ok, no thread jacking here dangit, i have the same problem as well, but its only for video files. my mp3's are fine. also, any video that plays fast in WMP runs fine in RealPlayer, now why is that? one more thing, when i try to play diablo2, the sound sounds horrible. it plays fine, then quiets down and seems to restart and/or skips. really odd and VERY annoying, can't play the game anymore. :-/ somebody help? running 98se also, gonna upgrad to xp this weekend i hope. :)

EDIT: ya, i also have an very long bootup time, over a 1 minute, it's horrible!

This is very strange. I would try exchanging the current board for another one and see if maybe it was simply a defective board. Now does everything with the sound work as it should in XP?

Also, it is basically a myth about 98 being better than XP for gaming with modern games such as UT, etc. Stick with XP, don't fight the system.

9x kicks the crap out of it for games

I just got my a7n8x today, when my cpu gets here if i find out 98se doent work ill go back to my a7v8x till the kt400a mobos come out !!

Dude get with the times. When was the last time you looked at anandtech's or firingsquads OS comparisons for gaming. XP is as fast and in most cases faster then 9X now a days, and in most cases more reliable.

Before you spout untrue information research the topic. Especially if it's been a few months since you last checked.

And for the record, unreal and RTCW both work perfectly well on Windows XP. So the original poster may want to check that out, and just blow off his 98se install to reclaim the diskspace.

Dude, take your own advice. Some games will NOT work in XP, no matter how many hacks MS tries to give with the emulate old DOS support.
Win98 remains, IMO, the best OS for gaming, as theres not a game under the sun you cant get to run on 98. Not ONE (Unless its a Linux port of course...)
Cant say the same about the NTFS based OS's or MS's "Great" XP.
