A7N8X won't stay powered on

My friend just built a computer with an A7N8X Deluxe mobo. He has the ATX power, RAM, CPU, CPU heatsink (plugged in) connected. When he presses the power button, it comes on for about four seconds, then shuts off. Does anyone know what might be wrong?

Check ASAP to ensure that the heatsink is oriented the correct direction. The stepped end of the heatsink must be located over the raised solid-plastic end of the CPU socket, which is inconveniently located at the top of the A7N8X's and therefore many people reverse the heatsink, unaware of the consequences (other than being able to reach the screwdriver end of the clip easily, that is 😉).

Figures 7, 13 and 14 of this PDF document show what to watch out for.

Another possibility is that he's got a heatsink that comes disassembled and has the heatsink on correctly, but the clip oriented wrong. Screwdriver-tip end of the clip has to go at the top.
 
I'll never understand why people say it's inconveniently located... it's only inconvenient if you install the heatsink with the motherboard installed in the case... which you shouldn't be doing anyway when those clips have about 15-20 lbs of clamping force that you must overcome to install it. Don't you start to worry when you see the motherboard flex and hear it snapping and crackling?
Install the heatsink with the motherboard out on a flat surface with some cushion behind it... like the thin foam pad that comes with motherboards... or at least a newspaper.

Good idea, but put the board on the anti-static bag and then on a soft but firm surface like the foam. Not only does this prevent possible static build up, but also prevents the pins on the back of the board from taking chunks of foam with them.

Remember, you can never be too careful.

Also, as to the point of this thread, what kind of PSU does he have? It could just be overdrawing one of the rails. Also, are there any beeps? Does anything else power up? Does the AGP LED light up?
