I have a ASUS A7N8X-E mobo with an AMD Athlon XP 1800+ CPU installed in it. I want to upgrade to something faster and was looking thru the manual what the max speed I could get for this mobo. Will the AMD Bartons work on this board?

ThX!

It will run any AthlonXP made :) What speed of RAM do you have, and do you want to re-use it?

(edit: I guess I'll be as correct as possible, and say "462-pin AthlonXP" because there will eventually be Socket754 AthlonXP's based off of the Athlon64 core)

Your motherboard will support any Athlon XP, including the mobile chips.

Well i only have older ram, 2x 512mb of PC2100. Would i be better off upgrading that too? Right now Im kind of on a budget so trying to get the most out of what I dont have to replace right this minute.

And about the CPU.. thats great to hear.. So i can use the mobiles too, thats intresting. Are the mobiles all unocked and can be OC'd well? How is this mobo for OC'ing? Ive never OC'd this board / amd 1800+ combo unlike the other board/cpu combos i had in the past, thats why i wanted to find out if i can use this mobo with a mobile cpu!

You would HAVE to replace your ram to use any Barton chip, except the mobile Bartons. That said, you would suffer quite alot from having 133mhz ram. The best performance comes from 200mhz fsb and higher. Why not buy a mobile Barton and one stick of PC3200 ram? Then you could sell your gig of PC2100, so you could buy another stick of PC3200.

edit: Of course, it would be cheaper if you just bought the ram, and overclocked the XP1800, assuming it's a T-bred B, that is. Alot of T-bred B's run at 2.3ghz, but that's going to require PC3200 ram.

Just to step back for a second, what are your overall computer specs, including the power supply brand/model/wattage? Also, what programs do you want to see the performance improved with? If it's mainly 3D gaming and you had, say, a Radeon 7500 or a GeForce2MX for video, then the first area to spend the money could be the video card. If it's media encoding or other CPU-limited stuff, then the CPU makes sense. Or maybe both :D

ASUS A7N8X-E mobo
AMD XP 1800+
2x 512mb PC2100 ram
Geforce 4 ti4600 128mb video card
Pioneer DVD reader
Pioneer DVD-RW recorder
WD 80gb HDD

I use my system mainly for gaming / watching dvd movies. I know the amd 1800+ is a tad outdated but honestly, i can still do pretty much everything i want on this system like it is. I just want to upgrade here and there so i dont fall too massivly behind and then upgrades end up being very costly!

Try raising your multiplier a small amount in your BIOS, if you want to see if your CPU is unlocked. If it were, you might be able to OC it with no expense. If it refuses to POST, hit the Reset button and it should revert to normal speed. Disclaimer: you do this at your own risk :p

I tried this out. Before i touched anything, it was set at 133 x 10.5.. i went all the way up to 133 x 12.5 (cant go higher then 12.5 i guess) and it works fine so far

I recently bought 2 of these mobo's (Deluxe versions) and 2 XP-M 2600+ chips. They run great at 12x200 (2.4ghz). I could easily go up more, but that's fast enough for me.

With 3 computers running in my den, all 3 with OC'd XPs and 9800Pros... I don't need the extra "heat". :D It's already warm enough in that room.

Could you please Explain me what settings you're using (preferably all bios settings if this is not too much trouble).

I have this Asus A7N8X-E deluxe
Amd Xp-M 2600+
Kingston Ram 1 GB pc3200
SHarkoon heatsink

I can't get this cpu to run. It defaults to 800 Mhz (6x133).
All other settings make my system crash/not boot. I have to reset the Cmos to get access again. As it seems it should be possible to run this CPU on the board so I would greatly appreciate if you would share your settings.
