A7n8x-e looking for the fastest cpu next up.

My rig is an A7N8X-e deluxe currently running an Athlon XP-M 2600 running at 2300 (184/12.5). The memory is HyperX400 2X512. I use a Hydrocool 200ex to keep the temps down. A thermaltake 560watt PS keeps a PNY Geforce 6800 ultra running very stable (245/1.14).

When I try to clock up it is UT 2004 that starts acting up (past the current settings) and I am thoroughly a player...

So, I wonder what you would suggest would be the best chip to place in this current config. I am not ready to get into new board/cpu/memory and the lot.

I appreciate you time,

jv

If those are your stable settings, then there is NO UPGRADE on that platform. You can upgrade to an A64 platform without too much pain (around $200) and keep the same memory.

A 2800+ at 2300-2400 MHz would be signifiacntly faster than your AXP at UT2004:

If you set the memory to 133 (2:3) at that CPU speed your memory would be in the 170 MHz range, which is less than you are currently running. So all should be stable. There are a number of people with A64 2800+, chaintech vnf3-250 and the retail heatsink getting those kind of speeds (including me).

The only other option you have is to find someone with an excellent overclocking mobile core, one that gets into the 2500+ MHz range, and buy it from them. But I think the A64 is going to give you a bigger gain. That is exactly the move I made from my Mobile that wouldn't run much above 2300 MHz.

Yeah, it would be a waste of money if you bought a 3200+.

U can't get anything higher on this platform. Get an A64.

If you Geforce 6800U is running at 245, that's a problem right there.

It's funny cause I got regular value ram from Corsair and I was able to OC it farther at low timings than your extraordinarily expensive one. Don't bother with those.

God, its hell to grow old.

I mean 425/1.14 on the Geforce Ultra!

How about a suggestion of a good board (I am fond of asus) to look into the move toward the
Athlon 64. And then of course a good performer for overclocking!

thanks, all of you!

I'd recommend maybe the socket 939 MSI or Asus board. You could consider trying to use an AMD AthlonXP mobile 3000+, but it's a DTR chip and therefore NOT a low wattage chip to start with(don't know how much you could overclock it by). 😉

>>an Athlon XP-M 2600 running at 2300 (184/12.5)

Now... try running it at 200MHz FSB. (200x11.5?)
Higher FSB = faster overall speed

JV, I'm also waiting for that A8N-SLI to arrive at Newegg 🙂
That with 3200+ (939) would be awesome!
Plus 6600GT PCI-e
But you'd have to let go your AGP 6800...

I have 2 A7N8X-e deluxe boards running M 2600's and neither one have any problems running 12x200. I've never had one crash or anything in the 6 or so months they've been running.

I "believe" the voltage is @ 2.7. Don't hold me to that though.

Like everyone is saying, wanting to upgrade it any further is futile.

If you could verify that voltage I would really appreciate it.

For the others, again, any advice on a good board/64bit combo that overclocks well (I love the way
the mobile XP 2600 worked out) would be great i.e. write up your experience!

You can't be serious....
2.7V sounds more like the RAM voltage. (2.5/2.6/2.7)
Mobile XP default voltage is at 1.35V/1.45V (except Mobile 3000+?)

Yeah...that would be a 1.7 Vcore. I have the same board with an Athlon XP mobile 2400+ running at 2.5 ghz on 1.7 volts. 😀
