A7N8X-del + 9800Pro, can't post for beans

Alright, so first my specs:
AMD AthlonXP 2500+
Asus A7N8X Deluxe, Rev2.00, BIOS 1008
1gb (2x512mb) Corsair XMS PC3200
Radeon 9800Pro
OCZ Powerstream 520W

Here?s my problem:
I can?t post with the 9800pro on board. Fans, optical drives, hard drives come one; hd light stays on; but no beep, no reporter, no video output. However, and here?s the thing that?s killing me: I can post and boot winxp with no problem when I put a nVidia GeForce5200 in.

Obvious things before you ask:
-Yes, I plugged in power to the 9800pro. One thing I noticed in the past is that when I forget to plug in power, it starts beeping and displays an error soon after posting. Now, when I leave the power unplugged, I don?t get the same error. Instead, I get the no post phenomenon.
-Yes, I remembered to uninstall the nVidia drivers when I put the ATI in. The fact that it doesn?t even post makes me thing it can?t be a driver issue.
-I cleared the CMOS and the problem remained.

Things I?ve ruled out:
-Mobo battery ? I read about Asus shipping POS batteries so I went out and replace it. However, the battery problem was causing corrupt bios. Based on the fact that I have no problem running on the GeForce, I?m ruling out a corrupt BIOS problem.
-Bad 9800pro ? I put the card in my brother?s identical mobo (A7N8X-Deluxe Rev2.00, BIOS1008) and it works without a problem. So I know it?s not an issue with the video card.
-Bad RAM ? I swapped in my old sticks of 256mb OCZ, put in just one stick of 512mb Transcend; all had no effect. Same no post problem as before.
-Mobo physical damage ? This is one I?m on the fence about. This is the only thing I can think of that would make the difference between my brother?s system and mine. But if it were damaged, I don?t see why the GeForce would work.

So I?m pleading to anyone who?s seen something like this to speak up. This is driving me nuts. Thanks in advance for any provided advice.

Wrong forum.

But just skimming over that makes me think it's the 9800 pro.

Clearing the drivers won't make a difference if the system itself isn't posting. That usually means it's a hardware issue.

Might want to try grabbing another 9800 pro and see if the new one works fine. If it does, then you have your answer.

I had this problem with the first A7N8X I bought. (Actually ASUS still hasn't contacted me for an RMA # :|).

Try a different mobo. Mine was posting sporadically and then quit altogether. I tried everything including rebuilding about five times. It's a known issue that some of these boards are simply DOA. Sad but true.

I ended up buying another brand spanking new A7N8X Deluxe and it hasn't *not* posted once. Best of luck!

But it boots up fine with the other vid card.

welcome to ATOT  🙂

*insert obligitory "wrong forum" here*

anyways it does sound like the motherboard. see if you can't find another one to test it out.

thanks for joining AT 🙂

At least he didn't post this in the OS forum, which seems to be the default forum for all hardware, networking, printing, application, or video problems.

strange - and the card in question works in another setup on an A7N8X. Again, I say bad mobo, but I could be wrong.

I agree. I had an Intel board with 9800pro. The vid card worked on another mobo and by putting a 32 meg radeon in the Intel board, that worked too. I could also get the Intel board to sporadically work with the 9800pro in it, but mostly it would power on but not post. For a while, I just never shut the computer off once it posted.

After pulling my hair out trying to figure out the problem, I finally just decided to get a new board. Never had a problem since then.

hey everyone, thanks for replying.
sorry that i posted in the wrong forum, where would stuff like this normally go?

General Hardware, or Technical Support.

or Motherboards... or possibly Video... 😛

i've had this mobo for a little less than 2 years, running a 9700pro. so it wasn't a doa mobo.
it never had a problem until recently. i would get all sorts of artifacts during post, winxp boot. i traded in my bro's card and everything seemed normal, so i figured it was the 9700pro. hence the rma'ing of the 9700pro to bring me to the current 9800pro. now that i'm still having issues, starting to think there might be a problem with the mobo that only appears when trying to use 9700/9800. i'm thinking rma'ing the mobo might make sense, but i'm wondering how asus is going to respond.

i'm starting to think that i will actually have to pick up the phone and call them to RMA my old board. I tried the e-mail form 3 times, and while they do send me the confirmation email, they never send me the RMA info or procedures. starting to think their RMA process sucks dink.
