Hi

Im currently still on the 939 platform and im not considering AM2/Conroe until next year.

I have a A64 3700 San Diego @ 2.85ghz on AIR, A8N32-SLI Deluxe, and a GeForce 7900 GTO flashed to GTX

What do you think my best option would be? Grab a X2 4800+ before there gone or another GTO and flash to GTX and SLI them? The GTOs are limited on stock as well!

There both the same price at 200 british pounds.

Help appreciated.

PS: Im a heavy gamer.

How often do you upgrade your video card? If not very often, id grab another 7900 and sli, since you can move those to your new mobo when you finally upgrade to am2/conroe.

im in the same boat as you, i'm considering either an X2 cpu or a 7600gt...IMO i'd take the CPU before they're gone...which im leaning towards...i hope

In my situation its either the highly acclaimed GTO a downclocked GTX (easily flashable to GTX) or a 4800. Both are limited stock once there gone there gone! I think the GTO is my best option, flash it and SLI. My 3700 SD @ 2.85ghz (poss go higher havnt really tried. I kinda stopped when I reached 2.85 didnt see any point going higher) is well fast enough for my games I think.

For games having 2 GTXs SLI and a 3700@2.85 is better than 1 GTX and a 4800, what do u think?

yeah.. i tink a SLI upgrade will do more good to your games than a better processor

GPU over CPU. Games are more dependent on the GPU. Besides the 2 cards could be moved to the next platform while the CPU could not.

Or if you can wait save the money for a DX10 card and AM2/C2D later on. Might be a better idea, does the single card you have now run everything fine?

To be quiet honest I dont really need to upgrade! My rig...

A64 3700+ SD @ 2.85GHz
ASUS A8N32-SLI Deluxe
2x1GB Corsair XMS4400 Pro TwinX @ 260MHz 2.5:3:3:8 1T
512MB MSI GeForce 7900 GTX (650/1600)

I can run all of my games with maxed out video setting at excellent FPS. FEAR runs at 65FPS avg. BF2, Q4, D3, are higher.

Im just power hungry lol.

well then save the money and hold off on the cravings until the DX10 cards come out, then you'll have real power :D

I think DX10 cards will be massively over-priced especially the high-end cards which ill want. Ive gotta funny feeling about it, itll take about 6 months for their prices to mature!

I would say go for the X2.

If it were me I wouldn't buy either and save the money.

I think not buying either is the wisest option. How good do you think my rig will be perform with future games until I notice its showing age?

evo4ever your CPU is fast enough, going SLI will allow you higher resolutions, max eye candy. ;)

If you need more speed try bumping your memory up.

By next year it could be showing it's age, if DX10 gets pushed hard.

ALOHA

P.S. Oh I didn't notice the specs you posted till later on. You should just hold out until DX10 comes along. ;)

Hold until the DX10 cards arrive. I have a rig very similar to yours, and it handles everything I throw at it. So I know you can hold out just a little longer :).

Unless you game at above 1600x1200 I'd go w/ the X2 the 7900GTO/GTX is fast enough to get good settings in most games at or below that res. might have to cut back on the AA and AF for some newer games in the future but I think the X2 is a better bet in this case for longjevity esp if you multi task alot.

def the 4800+, that would probably be a bigger overall performance increase for your system

Yeah. If I dont get the 4800 now i might not ever be able to get it! 939s are discontinued now. How well do the 4800s clock? can they hit 3ghz on AIR?

The average 4800 will do 2.6-2.8 Ghz, usually.

edit: Not that a few haven't hit 3.0 Ghz.

If you're only gaming at 1280x1024, then SLI won't really make a big difference.

Basically, the GPU is sorted now, the CPU will make no difference to your games really, but will make a noticeable difference (well, YMMV, but still) to any multitasking or just general windows work you do (say if an AV scan starts up, your PC won't become an unresponsive PITA)

cpu's do makea difference in hl2 based games like counter strike source... single cards can run up to 1680x1050 without much trouble
