A64 vs. XP

I was just wondering what the immediate performance increase would be of switching from an XP 2800+ to, let's say, an A64 2800+ would be. I know that the A64 has 64-bit capabilities for the future , but I also know that it runs 32-bit apps better than the XP's. My question is: how much better? Is it worth the money? Thanks alot!

the athlon 64 2800+ is, performance wise, comparable to the athlon xp 3200+. dont judge the cpu's by the name since their different. you would find a pretty good boost by going with the a64 2800+.

what sort of apps are you running?

most things seem to be a little faster with a huge imporvement in games.

see anandtech reveiws for benchmarks etc such as

http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/showdoc.aspx?i=2065&p=8

for more details.

you will then have to deceide whether the performance increase is justifed by what it would cost to upgrade, so so it very much depends what you think is worth it.

i do not know if buying an A64 chip now for future use is a good idea because it depends on how long you intend to keep the cpu, but also the rate at which useable software is relaised namily a 64bit OS and 64 bit Drivers.

hope this helps

There is a boost, but if I were considering upgrade options, I don't think it's enough to be worth $170 plus a new motherboard.

I find CPU upgrades that are <100% from the last CPU installed tend to go wasted , unless your doing some very computational work.

Yea, thanks for the replys. I think I will stick with my XP for now. It does what I need to do (games, music, movies, etc.) pretty well. From that link Cosmic_Horror put up (thanks btw) the gaming increases seem to be there, but not worth 100's of dollars at the moment. 🙂

I will do it someday though!

in benchies, there is a pretty sizable diff, but you will see NOT the slightest improvement in anything you do though. The only reason to upgrade would be to be future proof, or to have bragging rights, as an athlon xp 2800+ can game just as well as an athlon 64 2800+.. I have seen it first hand, my friend's athlon xp 2400+ was very, very close performance wise with the athlon 64 2800+ system my other friend has, if i couldnt see the cases, i would be hard pressed to tell the difference.

Bottom Line: Dont get an athlon 64 2800+ expecting the same leap in performance as a new video card.
