A64 or XP 3200+? - look inside...

Ok - I need to get a new PC for my dad (he wants it for gaming)

I can get a complete system with a XP 3200+ for about $350 after rebate. I was going to add my own video card.

I can get an A64 3200+ for about $550 with an FX 5500 for $570 AR.

What to get?

The difference isn't that great yet between the Athlon 64 and Athlon XP yet. I would probably get the XP machine now and wait to see how the socket 939 shakes out in a year.

Computers become obsolete so fast.

PS: I find it funny that your DAD is a gamer 🙂

Keep in mind the A64 is a dead end upgrade wise since Socket 939 A64's are just around the corner, and BTX/PCI-Express by year's end. Also considering how delayed WinXP 64 bit edition is, i'd go with the 3200+ and pocket the cash.

id say go for the xp 3200 and try to get one of those 9800 pros that go on sale every now and then at compugeeks (its the refurb one)

OMG!!! The 754 socket is NOT dead or even dieing. There are going to be 3 sockets, 754, 939, and 940.

754 = low end
939 = high end
940 = server

Go with a athlon64 socket 754. Has a good upgrade path and more performance.
And also get a 9600 Pro. Newegg.com has one for $112 shipped.

And if you do go Athlon XP, get a 2400-2600 Mobile chip. Cheaper and will clcok as high or higher.
