Hey,
I recently had a problem with my computer. I fixed it by running an installation of windows in repair mode on top of it. Everything works fine except my computer has forgotten how to turn itself off and cool'n'quiet doesn't work properly (it lowers the voltage but not hte clocks which confuses me on why my computer is still running...) Anyway. I figure my proc driver is gone since windows overwrites 3rd party drivers so i check device manager and find

-Computer name
|-Computer
|-MPS Multiprocessor PC
etc.

So i uninstall the old A64 drivers and reinstall them. restart. and nothing's changed. did this a few times. got bored. lived with it for a week. started get really annoyed by it and posted here.

Spec:
A64 X2 3800 @2.4
OCZ Plat 2x1GB
ASRock 939Dual-SATA2

Is your Windows Install on C:? That driver will only install on C:.

Be sure to check for Windows Updates and install any.

My windows install is on F: but I had the driver install properly with the same setup before i did my windows re-installation thing.
Only updates are for Windows Media Player

Okay, so i tried to install the driver manually but it says "The specified location does not contain information about your hardware" when i select the amdk8.inf from the ..\AMD\Athlon 64 Processor Driver folder.

Out of curiousity i put in the CD that came with my ASRock mobo and instead of listing the things it can install it just says "Detect no proper item." Would this imply something is wrong with the mobo chipset driver or something like that? Just in case I'm running the computer on OCWorkbench Beta3 BIOS

I'm sure reinstalling will work like you say sandorski but i'm going to wait and see if anyone else has input because i don't think its just the driver. Since the CD is not recognizing something and not letting me use its driver-y goodness i suspect there is something else, i just don't know what.

In an attempt to see if it was because of my BIOS version, i rolled it back to 1.30 but it didn't change anything. that was a waste of 15 minutes....

Try downloading/installing the latest chipset drivers if you haven't already.

Hey OP,

I had the same problem when I got my new PC a couple weeks ago. I had a Mitsumi 7-in-one drive that defaulted my main HDD to drive F:\. Once I attempted to install the AMD X2 driver, it said it could not find "boot.ini" in C:\. I thought that odd because the pre-installation dialogue stated that the driver would indeed install to the F:\ directory.

After asking for help on these lovely forums ( :) ), I disconnected my Mitsumi drive and had to do a reformat. My understanding is, although there is a way to change drive letters, it should not be tampered with on a volume with system files on it. Thus the reformat (luckily, I just got my PC, so I didn't have time to accumulate much on it).

The Windows install placed my primary HDD on C:\, the AMD CPU driver install went through without a hitch and all is well!

Alright,
So i tried the ULi chipset driver set and it didn't do anything
I'll probably end up doing what IG is saying and what Sandorski's been saying for a while at the end of this week when i get time (finals week... ahhh craph. on the other hand finals week -> vacation month = :)). I'm going to start backing everything up now. Thx for all your help
(on the bright note, a reformat means i can finally get my main drive back to C: like normal people... on the non-bright note, this will be my 5th install of windows in a month on the same computer...)
