A64 >>> AXP

Up until today, I had an XP/M that would do 2.65 if I really felt like pushing it for benching. The higheset 3dmark01 run I managed to make with it and my 9700TX was 19.7k, running the RAM at 2.0-3-2. Today, I got a Newcastle core 🙂() 3400+, and managed, at stock clocks, to hit 20.3k with RAM only at 2.5-3-3 2T, 20.3k. I am sure that with a bit of OCing (using the stock Prescott HSF, lol), I will hit something a bit better than that - 23k maybe?

Anyway, 2.65 would be rated at 3854+ (scaling linearly from the 3200+), so this proves that the A64 is a LOT faster per clock than the AXP.

If you can manage to get one for not much money (for the upgrade, counting mobo, I am only going to spend about $120 total), DO IT. You will not regret it.
 
hah, i'd love an A64+ & mobo combo for < $120

of course a64 is faster clock for clock than axp. its wrong to compare clock for clock in anything, unless youre an intel fanboi 😛

amd's using 4 different ratings schemes anyway 🙁

sempron is supposed to compare to older celerons (because celeron d's do a bit better)
axp's are supposed to compare to older p4's (400 and 533 fsbs, i guess)
then there's a64, which is a whole new level, compares to 800 fsb p4's?
the dual core is an extra 800+ points for some reason

and L2 cache screws up every scheme

dont forget the wacky fx line

so a sempron 1.6ghz == axp 1.6ghz == a64 1.6ghz == p4 1.6 😛

How can you be using a Intel Prescott heatsink on a A64 cpu??😕
 
2,61 Ghz (like my Winnie) is equivalent to A64 4115+ in raw Mhz speed, a bit more thanks to the FSB for sure 😉

One benchmark doesn't prove that the A64 is a much better chip, but I'm glad you're happy with the upgrade.

I have an adaptor - came with an XP-120 iirc. A friend of mine bought the XP-120 with the A64 kit as well, and then ended up using it on his Prescott (although I now have the XP-120 as well, and will be testing it)

As for how I got it for $120, I should clarify - I traded my NF7-S, XP/M and Zalman 6000 HSF for an Epox 8KDA3J, an XP-120, and about $25. And I bought a 3400+ that had died for $150, on the condition that I would get my money back if the RMA did not go through.
BTW, AMD has the BEST RMA service EVER. I shipped the CPU to them Priority Mail Tuesday and got the replacement Thursday. The only problem is it requires calling in, so it takes a hair more work, but it is FAST.
Sadly, they seem to just care that it is a 754 3400+ - I got a Newcastle core in return for a Clawhammer.

no, it would have cost a bit more than that if i had just bought it from him. however, i found out that it doesn't fit with the RAMsinks on my 9700TX, so i need to chop the sinks or something 🙁
all of this buying/selling was with people i know locally IRL, and neither one of them is a member here, so if someone sold their XP-120 for $25, i am not the one who bought it.
