Sorry if this has been posted before...I'm new. =)

I was going to order my new computer over the weekend, via Newegg, and there was one thing still bothering me. Is the 4000+ plus really so much better as to warrant a $100 price boost? As far as I can see, they are the same, but the 4000+ has a 1MB L2 cache, versus the 3800+'s 512KB. In all the tests and benchmarks I saw online, it made little difference, if any. Also, XbitLabs's overclocking test put the 3800+ past the capabilties of the FX-55, which costs about $450 more than the 3800+.

So my question was...is the 4000+ a waste of money?

Yes, the 4000+ is a waste, as is the 3800+.

The most expensive single-core CPU i would buy is the San Diego 3700+ (1 MB L2 cache). It will easily OC 200 MHz to hit 4000+ speeds, & likely hit 2.5 GHz or better, which puts it up there with the FX-53 & 55 & perhaps better depending on how lucky you get with OCing.

Really? I didn't know there was a 939-pin 3700+ on the market! If there is, much props to you for saving me some money :)

NewEgg link.

BTW, did you already buy the 3800+?
I noticed you have it in your sig...or is your sig just a preview of what you want to buy?

yeah
3700 or 4400 X2 for mid top end
3000 for the low end
(except for those dirt cheap sempron bundles that oc like crazy)
all need approprite supporting cast
power supply, cooling, mothrboard, appropriate for application video
a big surprise for most is that except for the top top end ram makes little differnece

Why waste money on the 3700. If you are going to Over Clock just buy a 3000+ Venice for $145 and OC it to 2.6-2.7 on air using the retail HSF that comes with it.

Close to FX55 stock performace for $145, hard to beat that deal!!! :) :) :)
