i just got my xp-90 installed over my skt 754 3200+ newcastle. so i tried overclocking it and reached up to 2.4ghz bootable on stock voltages. using speedfan my cpu temp is reading a 29c but when i last checked in the bios it was reading 42c. Are these normal or good temps?

Those are fine, though it's a rather large descrepancy.

Check to make sure Speedfan is using the correct diode, & change it if not.
