a64 3200+ and msi neo2 platinum help with overclock settings

well phew here i am finally! i just wanted to thank the members of this forum cuz it helped a newbie overclocker like me pick parts and get my very first successful do it myself overclock 🙂

neways here's my settings so far.

bios ver 1.41 (flashed with winflash 1.51)
HT 4x
mult 10x
fsb 240
agp 67 (locked)
cpu voltage 1.55
cpu volt % - 3.3% ( i guess it ends up being about ~1.59V)
mem voltage - 2.7
agp voltage 1.5

DRAM settings are
2.5-3-3-7-2T (1:1 ratio)

i must say the pdp ram with xbl and is a steal for the money. i got it from jpeyton's recommendation.

well, ive managed to gather all the info i could on programs i should run. so far i got cpu-z, super-pi, mbm5, and prime95. i tested superpi and my 1M test was 36sec. how does that compare to others? what other programs should i run?

mbm5 reports load temps (from prime95) at max of 53C and normal temps are 35-39C. is this normal?

how are the voltage settings and how will i know when i pushed my cpu too far?

should i leave my DRAM at 2T? is 1T better? how are the timings that i have set? what fsb does the ram require looser timings?

again thanks for all the help, i've learned a ton! sorry for all the questions!

my specs:
amd athlon 64 3200+ 939 oem chip (new)
msi neo2 platinum edition (new)
cooling is thermalright xp-90 with 92 mm panaflo fan
artic silver applied to cpu core
2x512 pdp (patriot) pc3200 with xbl technology (new)
200gb ide seagate hd (new)
evga geforce4 ti4200 128mb (used from my old working comp)
enermax 420 watt noisetaker (new)
lian li pc-6083 case. (from old comp)

im running 2.5 3 3 10 and it runs perfectly but im running at 255 1:1 and at 1t.. mess with it a little more.. i didnt add any voltage to my memory and it still runs that.. so mess with it more.. 2t gives u crap results ... but nice overclock.. and i have the xp90 too.. its amazing!

I need some major help.

I have effectivly the exacxt same system as you (see sig).

I have been trying to overclock for a while with almost no success. I bumped the FSB to 201!

Otherwise, I get the message that it is in safe mode or I end up having to boot from a floppy to restore the config.sys file. After I almost lost the ability to boot I gave up.

My sig shows what I have. I flashed to 1.4 BIOS and have updated every driver I could find. I have tested the system for hours to make sure it is stable and that everything is working when it is not overclocked.

Can you please break this down for me into very simple terms? I need to know the EXACT settings in the BIOS. Plesae don't abbreviate! The name for things in the BIOS are not exactly what they are called elsewhere. I want to dupicate you system EXATLY so that I get the same result.

I will provide an e-mail (lexiconargus@hotmial.com) if you have screen captures of the BIOS you can send me.

thanks a bunch.

Jeff

I am go to paste some ideas here...you need first to determine the cpu max...so set ram to lower divider and loose timings....you have excellent ram it will do better...
Make sure you take your time and try to overclock one thing at a time..first get the cpu max...then go back and tinker with ram

ram set 133 divider..3-3-3-10 2t(you may have better ram but just start here)
set your ddr voltage to 2.6v or 2.7v( trust you will be fine..I am using kingston pc2700 valuram rated 2.5v at 2.7v)
increase the vcore..start at 1.5v with over vid of 3.3%
speed spectrum off
dynamic overcloking off
agp voltage 1.6
make sure agp 67 ..this will lock the pci bus at 33 and agp at 66/67
also turn AGP fast writes off.... my BFG 6800 OC had huge stuttering issues ...*******
also make sure htt is set at 4x up to about 250 and 3x 250- 300

Hidden Bios settings:
make sure in BIOS you have CELL highlighted
then hit ALT + F2 then Shift + F3(always takes me a few times before it works)...go into cell and you will see some more options
make sure ati/nv speed is off..this will o/c your agp card

I am running a A64 3200 at 10x255..best my chip will do

my settings
ram 133 2.5-3-3-10 1t( I have some cheap valuram but you want to start loose to test cpu)
ddr voltage 2.7v
speed spectrum off
dynamic o/cing is off
cooln quiet off
nv/ati speed up off
pci auto lock(or whatever) leave it at default
dram strength normal(I have no idea what this does)
htt 4x
cpu 10
fsb 255
vcore..1.5v with 8.3% over vid( I need this vcore to get 2550 prime 95 stable)
agp 67(locks pci bus at 33 and agp 67)

AGP....side banding is auto and fast writes off

also the SATA 1&2 are not locked so make if you have a SATA HDD it is on SATA 3 or 4

I would start 10x 250(you can go lower if you like)...2500 if boots and winxp is ok....you have several options you reboot and try higher or run prime 95 to test if its stable

then go back and increase the cpu speed...you may eventually need more vcore do not exceed 1.65v

on Neo 2 1.5v at default will be like 1.38v...the mobo undervolts....
1.5vcore w/3.3% over vid will equal 1.43 idle 1.47v load
1.5v w/5% 1.52v ilde 1.55v load
1.5w/8.3% 1.55v/1.57v idle 1.58load
1.5v w/10% 1.60v idle 1.62/1.63v load

good luck

Neal

just remember to lower the ram and lowet htt t o3x...get max on cpu first then go back and tinker with ram settings

i stuck at 240 cuz i was afraid of going too high. i'm new at this but what do i do if i push it to say.. 255 and windows doesnt post. could it potentiall damage my operating system? what do i do if my computer doesnt post at all. i heard holding down insert? will put back relaxed settings in the msi bios but i havent tested this myself.

lexicon why did u have to restore the config.sys file? it got corrupted? i hope that doesnt happen to me.. but i do have a ghost img backup.

lexicon why don't u start off by showing us your settings line by line. the guys here are great at helping...

your not getting it lower your ram timings so you can find the max cpu speed....otherwise if your afraid and there is always a risk to o/c..and you can trash a windows install...stay at 240

Thanks for the help.

The reason I did not post the BIOS setting was because they were at the stock settings. As soon as I tried to up the FSB to 220+ I had problems.

I have put my system on the exact setting you specified. I was able to get to FSB 255 but it cannot pass Prime95 test. I bumped it to 250 and it failed. I currently have 2 hours at FSB 246 and it seems to be passing. Temps are not an issue.

I am very happy with 10 x 246 FSB. The memory is at 1T 2.5-3-3-10 (166).

The part that is not working well is the memory. The highest I was able to get it to go and still boot into Windows was at FSB 255 and the mem at 166 = 212mhz or DDR424. The HT is a 4x. At the 200 mem setting (1:1) it went into safe mode.

This memory is supposed to be stable (per the review in this web site) up to DDR557. Since my Prime95 test is still in work I have not had the chance to see if the memory will take at the 200 setting (1:1) at FSB of 246.

1. Please tell me what the HT setting is. What is 5x, 4x, 3x? What does this change?

2. If I set the memory at the 200 setting (1:1) with the FSB at 246 then I should be at DDR492 correct? Why is the memory not doing this easily?

Who can help me understand what setting will get this memory to the DDR rating it is supposed to do?

Thanks,

Jeff

i just know that HT is supposed to be around 1000. so you said your fsb is 246. so if HT is 4x then 246*4= 984. You should leave it at 4x. im not sure if leaving at 3x or 5x will make a big difference.

also, i dont know much about your ram, but at your settings you should try running the tightest timings your ram can go since you are using the divider (166). i believe for that ram it is 2-2-2-5.

"2. If I set the memory at the 200 setting (1:1) with the FSB at 246 then I should be at DDR492 correct? Why is the memory not doing this easily? "

how do you know it is not doing it easy if you havent tried?
("Since my Prime95 test is still in work I have not had the chance to see if the memory will take at the 200 setting (1:1) at FSB of 246.")

Every time I tried to boot with the mem at 200 (1:1) it goes into safe mode. While I have yet to try it at the current settings, it has gone into safe mode with the FSB as low as 220. I think I must be missing something. I thought that the HT setting might be the issue since I don't understand what it is. I have it at 4x that would seem to be what most people use.

WA261 - Please explain your post. I have the vcore at 1.5v and have been trying the +3.3%, +5%, and +8.3% settings. Are you saying that the BIOS function that is supposed to be bumping the voltage by a % does not work? What settings are you suggesting in the BIOS for voltage?

The good news is that is passed the Prime95 test at FSB = 246.

The bad news is that after I tried setting the memory to (1:1) 200. I get nothing but a blank screen. I am freaked out.

How do I get it so it will boot?

Are there jumpers I can throw to get the BIOS reset?

Thanks,

Jeff

yes, there is a jump that u can clear ur cmos near the lower left corner of the board. but read the user manuel first, the details are on there.

please lower your ram to ram 133...and try again to see the limit of the cpu..your ram may still be an issue even though it is rated to run at higher settings on some mobos and fsb you need a lower timings...bottom line given the A64 low latencies the perfomance gains on higher memory settings is just not there ..see Zebo posting in cpu/ocing

lower thram find out if the cpu will go higher then slow adjust the ram

Sorry for all the drama.

I was able to get it back. The BIOS refused to allow the HT to be reset but then I got it to work by using the up down arrows instead of pulling up the menue.

The system passed with FSB 249 with the mem at 2.5-3-3-10 (166). I have found better stability by making the voltage 1.475 and then adding the +5% multiplier. The memory is rated at 2.8v and I have it at 2.75.

I am now testing at FSB 252. The memory I have clearly will not do the DDR suggested. I will bump the FSB until I get a failed Prime95. Beyond that I can try the +8.3% voltage multiplier and see if the CPU will take it.

Thanks to you all for your help. 10 x 252 fsb was more than I had hoped for when I got this CPU so the disapointing memory is not a big deal.

Jeff
