A64 3000 retail question about HSF

Does it look like someone took a belt sander to it? I got this refurb from newegg which is supposed to be new returns and it looked like someone tried to make it look as crappy as possible so I cleaned all the whatever type of goop that was on it off, and it looks like the bottom of the HSF had a belt sander taken to it.

I am not looking for a lecture on Newegg refurbs I just want to know if this is how they look. I took pictures of the crap pile and will be forwarding them to newegg management. There is NO WAY this should have ever went back out the door. I have bought refurbs from them for years so YES I do know what to expect...this was well beyond my expectations of CRAP.

LMK about the HSF.

I no longer have the stock heatsink anymore, but I don't really remember the finish being all that bad. I mean it wasn't mirror smooth or anything, but not like what you describe.

Since you bought it refurbed Newegg will either replace it if they have more in stock, or refund you completely without a restocking fee. I would personally just be happy that I got a good deal on a retail chip with a longer warranty and be on my way.

A belt sander with what grit sand-paper? Do you mean the surface is just really rough? Can you sand it down smoother or is it sort of chunked-up?

just rough looking and I can set the CPU to the HSF and put it up to the light and see a very small gap...scaring me.

Dude, don't freak The retail cooler does have a rough bottom but that compound you scraped off was Shin-etsu G751 which is very good stuff and thanks to it the rough bttom doesn't make for a problem. I used it with my 3000+ for a while when I got it and it worked great, even@2.2ghz 1.55v Look familiar?

Personally I hate silver based compounds. Besides I've seen AS2 dry out over time but have never had shin-etsu do that.

If it's silver based I still won't use it though, I'm a hater :laugh: I use and like Ceramique', just not for A64 as I suffered the adhesive effect some P4 owners complained of last year.
