I'm Leaning towards the i3 and just upgrading the ram down the road if it's worth the extra cost over the APU

So what is the price of these two laptops that you are considering? Like I said, a full power mobile i3 or Richland/Kaveri APU will be much more powerful than either of these if battery life is not critical. Like I said I got a HP i3 for 360.00 that is 2.4 ghz and runs very cool and is way faster than either of these would be. It did not have a touch screen though, which did not matter to me, not to mention trying to teach my wife to use it. Of course your daughter is different, and it may be important to her.

My experience with a touchscreen windows tablet though, is that the touch interface is OK for browsing, but for any kind of heavier use, you really need to attach a mouse.

Personally its gona depend if:

1) The I3 is from Lenovo

2) The I3 has or it can have DC mem


If 1 is true, go for Beema

if 1 is false and 2 is true go for the I3 and load up the DC if you can

if 1 is false and 2 is false, them is a very difficult decision, in one side you have 8gb of ram that is important in other the I3 with slightly superior performance, its hard, but i may pick up the Beema just for that extra ram.

They are both the same laptop with a different CPU.

Dell Inspiron 15 3000 series.

she has a gift card for a specific site and she wants a touch screen so choices are limited.

That's interesting

It's a drive I have and have used in past but is currently just sitting in a closet. I had no idea

I was very happy with its performance when I was using it . I remember it testing quite quick.

Mine is black though and not gold so I may have the "switch" version.

The i3 will have slightly better singlethread performance and equivalent multithread performance. Graphical performance is largely equivalent with a slight edge to the i3.

4 GB vs. 8 GB RAM will make little to no difference with the load you are placing on it. 8 GB is nice however.

Personally, I'd go with the 8 GB RAM.

I did not see it, Where? if it has 2 slot keep im mind the I3 gona get a gaming boost if you put in a 2nd 4gb mem on it.

i3 for IPC grunt which emulators normally want, but which emulator? Dolphin i3 sure, SNES or GBA either one. i3 Haswell can do 23.976 solid too, can AMD?

I went with the i3 model. Thought I should update.

I don't think she will use more than 4GB of Ram right now and by the time shes at the age where she may, she will probably have another laptop. I could just pickup an 8GB stick down the road. (I did confirm these Inspiron 15 3xxx series laptops only have 1 Ram slot)

I am sure she will like it. I didn't see anyone mention this, but the Intel Haswell i3 will give much better battery life over the AMD option. Combined with the SSD, I think she is going to be veru happy with it.

where is your source for the battery life comment? from notebookcheck it seems that beema uses less power.

Often, sources are urban legends recycled for the purpose.

The i3 Haswell U get to the same perfs level as a Beema, but for this it consume 30% more at the CPU level and 24% more for a whole plateform, as can be seen at Notebookcheck when using a same laptop whose only difference is the processor brand.

I am impressed. The reviews you listed show them about dead even on battery life. Oh, it's not so most urban legend, more like how far AMD has come. One example is a customer with an HP laptop running an AMD chip (couple years ago) and that thing was an oven whenever I touched it. Battery life was very short as well. I had (and still have) a Lenovo that doesn't get near as hot and battery lasts much longer.

I know money is tight, but I would get the i3 laptop. As soon as you are able, upgrade the RAM to 8GB. Once you buy the main laptop with CPU, you will have it for the life of the laptop.

Actualy they are not, at full load Beema has 44% better battery life for the same perfs, this say that if you start to push usage beyond browsing the AMD based laptop will last substancialy longer, not counting the noise that is noticeably higher with the 4030U, this shouldnt change with a 4005U.
