They are pretty much the same for me, I'm not a camera freak.

The only reason I want the S200 though is because of the tiny size. I can stick in my pocket and take it wherever w/o any inconvenience.

rh71, here's my guess: The miniscule amount of light in a dark room needs to be exposed in the exact same spot for the 15 seconds in order to be visible.

Use a tripod, or set it on the table.
Didn't work... same result. Is the ISO Speed of 50 okay ? Any other special settings besides 15" and on "M" mode? I also tried a lit room - there's 2 lights near the viewfinder on the back... only 1 light blinks during those 15 seconds in a lit room, and both lights blink in a very dark room. Is this right also ?

The lit room pic comes out way overexposed (too bright), but the dark room stays dark.

too many A40ers.

i have switched sides and became a S200er.

I don't have any pictures I think push the limits of the camera... one sec...

i would definately get the s200 over the a40... ive gone over this when the 2 cameras first came out (early summer?)

the s200's size is terrific.. not only that but IT HAS AN ALUMINUM SHELL.. the body feels very very solid. think about the pocketability you get with the s200...toss it in pocket and carry it anywhere. its especially good for parties and stuff.

go to the store, and play with one yourself. it'll definately win you over

Oh man...I've been hangin out on AT too long.

When I first read that, I thought it omitted the word "one." 😱

Almost spit Coke all over my keyboard...whew, that was close!

oops. anyways, s200 because as nice as another camera might be ... the best camera is the one u have when u need to take a picture🙂 s200/230 fits in your pocket and doesn't weigh you down, its built solidly, the battery is good for 85 minutes which is excellent, it has incredible amount of features for size, and the pictures come out nice.

all other bigger cameras u will only tote with you when you go on a trip. at this budget level its better to go with convenience/usability. how it feels in your hand doesnt matter if it feels like a brick in your pocket.

once you can afford nicer cameras you can get a 4-5megapixel monster you can carry around on trips in addition for those super professional pictures🙂

the a40 people are only a40 because of hotdeals😛

I will tomorrow. I would today, if fsckin UPS dropped off my package liek they were supposed to! :| :| :| :| I was fscking home when they "attempted" delivery. I even fsckin left the door open.

I have an S200, I just think you can't beat putting it in your pocket and taking it with you all day. The image quality is very good too IMO.

okay guys, i have made my decision...... i am going to get the s200, just because its convenient and its pretty cheap right now. I am sorry to all you A40 lovers out there, plez don't hate me, we are still in the canon family.

okay, now, lets talk about problems of the cam.
i have visited reviews, and i noticed that people always comment on the flash of the s200 is not good enough in dark places. hmm... is it that much of a problem to consider?

Major problems with focusing in low light. Go to the canon dpreview forums and just search for focus s200 or something like that. All the older gen canons have really bad focusing sometimes, especially in low light. My s30 can focus but you need a steady damn hand or a tripod. It doesn't help that I like to keep it at iso 50 to keep the grain down, but when it focuses and takes the pic, it works wonders: pic

ok... lets talk about Canon problems....

low-light focusing problems... never had it...methinks maybe some people arent using their camera correctly
flash... its kinda funny, ive taken some pictures in almost complete darkness, and the flash fills in perfectly, but for OUTDOORS medium-distance shots, the flash is weak... however, thats where the SLOW FLASH SYNC mode comes on... people just dont know that. the flash is rated up to around 13 ft at wide-angle methinks... just about as far as other cameras...its just that you have to work the camera correctly

lastly, the battery on the digital Elph (s330/s200) lasts longer than on the S30/40/45

Ok, I'm still looking for an answer to my problem (and one more person here, apparently). I'm one step from joining the Canon A-series user group ! 😉

dont remember exactly, but there are 2 reasons for lights blinking

1 is that it reminds you to hold your hand steady because of the long shutter speed (anything longer than 1/60th)

another blinks to tell you that the camera does not have focus

my guess is that the 2nd light that comes on during the very very dark pic is the focusing light, because the focus assist light doesnt work well enough when the setting is THAT dark

do you have to use that program with the s200 to do stitching or can you just do it in the camera?

btw, did you use a tripod for that pic?
