A40 vs. s200

I saw the post in the hot deals thread about the s200 for $249. I went to do some research to see if it is worth its price. although i want the s230, i am willing to wait for it till the price drop, the current price range for the s230 is a little too high for me. then, i looked around to find out that the A40 camera is much cheaper than the s200, and people seem to prefer it more? why is that? the s200's size is impressive comparing to the A40. And i have seen some s200 pics, they are pretty good.

so whats the deal between the A40 and the s200

I'm impressed too... I haven't been able to get that type of picture at night, but then again I don't have a tripod to steady the picture for night shots.

I have an A40. I absolutely love it. It's my first digi cam. I'm pretty sure it's bulkier than the s200. I have big hands and the last thing I wanted was a small camera. You can also get adapters for extra lenses. I've had no problems with my camera at all.

Me too. I got the A40 somewhat becasue of it's bigger size as well becasue with my big clunky hands I couldn't even hold a Camera like the Elph. Sometimes the ever shrinking Electronics is not the best thing.

I've got an s200 and my brother has an a40. I'd say the photos are pretty much the same quality. It's really a question of do you want small spy camera, or the interchangable lenses. (I also personally don't like cameras that take AA batteries like the a40).

so the s200 takes lithiums? hm..higher maintanence cost

not sure if they are lithiums... but the s200 has a little rectangular battery pack, so if you run out of batteries some where and didn't spend the extra money for a spare pack, your kinda sol.

I filmed the Space Station going over our house last night with the A40, couldn't even think about doing that with a Vid Cam.

Plus got rechargable AA's for it. And if run out for some reason can always grab a bunch of AA's anywhere.

well, w/ the elphs...u sacrifice size for a lot of things...and one of them is price...me, i don't really care much for the size....my camera, the minolta s404 (nabbed it on an auction @ $316 new in box shipped..) is really great for me......kinda bulky, but i carry a ton of batteries and accessories w/ it...so size isn't a factor for me...cuz i'm going to be carrying it inside a case w/ stuff in it anyways....

nice..s200 has rechargable lithium

but it only has 2x optical zoom vs the 3x on a40

Although the S200 is higher end than the A40, I prefer the A40. It's a more realistic camera size, video recording with audio is nice, and I'm actually HAPPY that it takes regular 'ole AA batteries, why?

Panasonic charger, 6 AA 1600 mAH's, & 2 AAA's for $12.99

I have the A40 and really like it. I've also given a few members here advice on how to get the current best deal on it. Let me know if you end up being interested, and I'll PM you with the info.

I've also PMed you with a link to some of my A40 sample shots. You'll like. 🙂

The cameras will have very similar image quality. The main differences are here:

1. S200 is smaller
2. S200 has its own battery, A40 uses AA
3. A40 has 3x optical zoom, S200 only has 2x

My opinions on these differences:

1. Small is nice. But there's also something to be said for easier gripping of the larger A40.
2. Each has its positives and negatives -- a toss-up IMO.
3. The more zoom, the happier I am!

There's other differences, such as audio recording, and a slightly better macro (close-up) system on the S200, but those are minor in my eyes.

Thus, I would recommend the A40 personally. (Even if there were no price difference.)

I too have the A40 and am extremely pleased with it. It's my 3rd digi cam and by far the best so far.

RossMAN, have you learned how to use yours yet😉

Very nice list of features, A+++

The Canon A40 is STILL my favorite digicam and I WILL learn how to use it this year.

We should create a perpetual A40 Users Thread to discuss features, advice, problems, etc. I was thinking about creating one yesterday.

I think that's a great idea. I'm sure there are at least 50 Canon A40 owners who are registered and maybe another dozen who are lurkers.

They could all benefit from such a thread. Especially myself!

Wow, 50 owners? That's really amazing. Okay, I'll try to get that thread going in the next day or so. Do I have permission to call it "RossMAN-Approved"? (Because that will definitely help it's popularity! 😉 )

Another vote for the A40, my only regret is that I didn't buy two of them.

Here are some pics taken in difficult lighting conditions from a total A40 newbie:

Sunset at Cannon Beach, OR weekend before last (700KB)

Union Station in Tacoma, WA on a dark rainy night. This pic was actually taken at the low quality setting and no tripod was used so it isn't quite perfect. (450KB)
