The Halifax Disaster took place today in 1917. 2000 people killed instantly and 4000 injured. Let us remember them in our christmass wishes today.

My search reveals that the disaster took place On the morning of Dec. 6, 1917. Sounds like a horrific incident. :frown:

An ammunition ship cought fire and exploded in the harbor. My grandmather/father were both injured in it. My grandmother lost her sight. 🙁 I live about 5 hours from halifax right now, so it's all that's on the news for 2 weeks striaght.

Thanks for the post. I had never heard of this Manmade Maritime disaster and I grew up on the water on south shore of Long Island New York.

That is odd. It was honoured today.

It was the largest manmade explosion before the atomic bomb.

A french munitions ship on fire and then explodes. One very nasty incident.

Forgot to add this: Major humanitarian aid came from the states and mostly from Boston. They were so glad for the help that every year they cut down a huge christmass tree and ship it to Boston. They then decorate it and use it as a reminder for the help they gave Halifax and for the gratitude that Halifax has for Boston.

There was a few freak incidents where survivors flew over a kilometer and survived... people were knocked over miles away... that is also why Halifax is one of the more modern cities, so much had to be rebuilt.

Remember seeing a special on History or some such channel. Was truly amazed at that.

But was the explosion the largest or was that the Springhill Mining Disaster (about which U2 wrote a song) or are they the same thing?
