A very odd mouse problem

I bought a gaming mouse a few months ago, only because it was on sale. Lately, it has become defective, but the problems only show up after about 20 minutes (or more) of usage. Because of this, I can't get it replaced, they don't have time to sit around for 20 minutes to see when and if problems show up.

This is what happens after that interval:
1. clicking becomes unresponsive, even after the click is made if I press too lightly it releases and re-clicks constantly.
2. cursor movement isn't smooth anymore, it starts spazzing around the screen at a high speed, usually in the opposite direction and the frequency of those glitchy movements becomes higher when the cursor is moved very slowly, I have to move it really fast in other to click on buttons

Anyone know what might be the problem? I didn't do any changes to the firmware and this problem showed up for apparently no reason. I tried changing the polling rate to a lower frequency, reinstalled the drivers, uplugged the mouse (the next day it works fine but after 20 mins of usage it becomes defective again), etc.

The only explanation is that it's somehow overheating.

Thanks for reading.

is this a wireless mouse?

Oh, sorry for not mentioning. Nope, it isn't. If it was wireless I would've changed the batteries or checked for interference sources, so the problem would've been easier to solve.

Thanks for your reply.

Here's an alternative scenario: You have a poor quality / old / defective PSU in the PC, and after it starts to heat up, the +5V line (or +5Vsb, depending on mobo and / or jumper setiings for USB power) starts flaking out, and affecting your USB devices.

My PSU is a high quality, brand new Seasonic, so I don't think that's the problem. Also, I tried 2 different mice, a keyboard and I also have an USB DAC (that should be very sensible I guess) and none of them had any problems, they work just fine. Also, this mouse behaves the same way when plugged in my other computer. Also tried changing usb slots, usb2 vs usb3 makes no difference. Front panel vs motherboard slots no difference.

i remember something similar from long, long ago, before XP SP1. software issue.

overheating is impossible btw.

i suggest buying a $1 mouse and trying to replicate the issue; if it happens again, consider doing a brand new install of the OS.

I actually do have a 1$ mouse, lol. It works perfectly.

I thought about that too, but after I reinstalled the drivers and the mouse software and firmware I thought I tried everything. I don't think I have viruses, I do scans periodically (and I don't think I was unlucky enough to be targeted by an undetectable virus), I didn't run any executables or visit dubious sites in a long time, and I have all the necessary plugins for good browser security and I disabled java. Do you think there is any way to to fix this problem without reinstalling? I have a 1tb hard drive full of installed programs and I don't have time to install them again. I wonder what programs could cause conflicts with the mouse in such a bizarre way.

Thanks.

it is almost certainly something akin to what Larry said. i assume the $1 mouse is a ps/2 mouse, right?
if yes, it's something messed up on the USB ports - it causes timeouts somewhere in your OS, and it could be either software, or hardware.

i.e : you either have a conflict with something that cannot keep up with the USB polling .. or the USB ports/paths themselves are damaged, and periodically send out broken data which causes the freezes.

i doubt that the mouse itself could cause that - the insides of a mouse are ultra-basic, no processing takes place there; it's basically a camera.

i hate to break your heart but .. could you try NOT using the mouse drivers/software?
more so if it's a logitech. setpoint and .. the other one, wahtsitcalled .. they suck balls.

after uninstalling, clean the registry too. manually if you have to.

Sorry, I was dumb, I tested a few mice but the main mouse that I'm using is a 1$ ps/2 mouse. I'll see tomorrow if other usb mice behave the same.

I tested the gaming mouse again and it looks like it's affected by usage, not time. I left my PC open all night with the mouse plugged in and it worked fine in the morning for about 5 minutes, and after that it started behaving erratically again.

Thank you for your help!

this is the mouse btw:
http://mionix.net/mice/avior-7000/

"32bit ARM™ processor enables the mouse to have many features without compromising the tracking of the sensor. "

and this is what I was talking about, apparently they use that tiny processor to calculate DPI interpolation but that shouldn't be a problem in my case, because I set the DPI to the maximum the hardware can actually read, so no interpolation takes place

Software issue then, almost certainly.

Software issue then, almost certainly.

But where's the software problem located exactly? When I unplug the mouse and plug it into a different computer the problem persists. I even tested the mouse with my Android phone, same thing happens (I used an USB adapter). I only know one thing, I'm never going to buy anything from this shitty ass company "Mionix" again.

actually, mionix makes mice which are very popular with the hardcore; might i suggest to contact their customer service?

I noticed that they're popular but their mice are still pretty damn crap. It sucks paying $100 for a mouse that fails to do what a 1$ ps/2 mouse can. Truth is, I didn't even have time for playing videogames this year and I didn't abuse it, I should've gotten at least 2 years of usage from it, not a few months. I'll still recommend people to avoid this crappy Swedish brand. Mionix sucks. Hope people find this thread when they're searching for reviews.

My first "go to" resort when problems like this come up is to get rid of and then recreate the virtual memory.

There have been so many times when I have had strange sporadic and weird problems and just doing this with a couple of reboots has cured it.

The most recent example can be found here:
http://us.battle.net/d3/en/forum/topic/18300015413

To refresh the virtual memory do the following:
This is how to get to the virtual memory in Windows 7 (for other versions of Windows search for "Virtual Memory" and follow the instructions with regard to changing the size below).

Click "Start"
Click on "Control Panel"
Click on "System and Security"
Click on "System"
Click on "Advanced System Settings" in the left pane
Click on the "Settings under "Performance
Click on the "Advanced" tab
Click on "Change" under Virtual Memory (paging file is synonymous with Virtual Memory - in Linux this is also called the "Swap file").
Take the checkmark out of the box "Automatically manage paging file size ofr all drivers".
Click on the radio button beside "Custom Size"
Now enter the value 4096 in both the "Initial Size" and "Maximum Size"
Click on "Set"
Click "OK"
You will be asked to reboot.
