So basically I have the following

Desktop PC with 9800 pro (VGA AND DVI outputs)
DVD player (dont have it yet)
Cable line for TV
19" LCD Monitor

I want to be able to use all those on the monitor...and pref be able to record TV at my disscrecion. There are dvd players with VGA out, but didnt know if thats what i need for this or not

Uh why not get a DVD-ROM drive (suprised you don't already have one) and some playback software? Then simply buy a TV tuner card and use that for viewing/recording TV programming.

dont ask but my DVD rom wont play my burned DVDs, which is the only type of dvd in my collection

1)Buy a TV-Tuner/Capture card. A good basic one is a Hauppage PVR150; found for less than $70. TV Tuner with a VERY GOOD MPEG encoder for capture; use it like a TiVo.
2)Toss the DVD Player; buy a newer DVD-ROM (or even a DVDRW) with PowerDVD or WinDVD.

but wont installing a card use PSU resources when encoding?

Dave, 😀

digitalsnare, WTF are you talking about? If you meant "CPU resources", please refer to the part of my post when I spoke of a MPEG encoder...ie hardware encoder. Little to no resources.
