Dexter has a pretty good intro as far as modern shows are concerned.

True Blood also has a great intro. (Too bad the show is not up to the same standards)

So, I would say for opening sequences to modern shows it goes:

1. Game of Thrones
2. True Blood
3. Dexter

taken as a whole, with all the different evolutions, i'd say gilligan's island, three's company, and brady bunch are too close to call for greatest ever. other legit contenders have to include doctor who, the twilight zone, i dream of jeannie and batman. is there a modern era show with a better opening than game of thrones? i very much doubt it.

I'd add to that Cheers, The Greatest American Hero, and The Beverly Hillbillies.

No such discussion can be had without mention of Welcome Back Kotter or WKRP. Also Taxi. Is Cheers too recent for this? ...I think not.

oh yeah, as Fritzo said: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ria37d9mInY&feature=kp

aadams family, jeffersons, wkrp...all solid choices. nobody mentioned the dukes of hazzard yet?

keep in mind, were discussing the merits of the intros only - people in hell are forced to watch most of these shows. there might be a PhD in it for someone that can thoroughly juxtapose the greatness of these intros to the awfulness of the shows, with graphs.

Cheers was a perfect intro, really captured the spirit of the show.

No All in the Family yet? Or Mary Tyler Moore?

MASH was kinda close, but they sorta sapped it up.

oh man, gilligan's island

that theme song is what started me down the fun and enriching road of playing songs on piano by ear

i couldn't stop playing that song, including the key changes, until i had gotten it down perfectly

and i agree about the cheers these song, that was also super catchy

it had a weird side effect of sometimes giving me simple partial seizures... i am not quite sure why. a few other songs did the same thing.
