The Lexus RX400h is sexy though.

Indeed.

Hybrids are a good start, but they just aren't cost feasible yet. Gas prices would have to spike pretty damn high for anyone to get excited about them enough to have a serious market. Frankly, I just think they have more parts that will want to break on them, and I certainly don't need a Ford with more parts to break. I'm still more excited about hydrogen fuel cells.

IIRC Toyota "helped" Ford with the Escape's hybrid system.

PSA for Rescue Personnel.

The last sentence pretty much puts a sock on the PC on this.

(I used to use the Jaws of Life to extricate wreck victims so I know very well about this issue)

If I was still on the force I would add a DVM to the strap on my Helmet.

5-4-2004 Rescue Workers Say Hybrid Cars a Danger

PHILADELPHIA - The growing popularity of hybrid vehicles is a step toward cleaner air and less dependance on gasoline. But for rescuers at accident scenes, they represent a potential new danger: a network of high-voltage circuitry that may require some precise cutting to save a trapped victim.

You don't want to go crushing anything with hydraulic tools," said Samuel Caroluzzi, an assistant chief with the Norristown Fire Department outside Philadelphia. "It's enough to kill you from what they're telling us in training."

The battery powering the electric motor carries as much as 500 volts, more than 40 times the strength of a standard battery.

The Alachua County Fire Rescue in Gainesville, Fla., even has two hybrids of its own. Although its crews haven't had to deal with a hybrid crash, they've been getting versed on what to do when it happens, said Cliff Chapman, assistant chief.

They know not to cut into a hybrid's doors ? that's where many of the cables are ? and to peel off the roof instead. They also now operate under the assumption that a car is energized, wearing rubber gloves and boots.

Manufacturers say they will continue to keep rescue personnel up to date on their hybrids. But they also contend that hybrids can be seen as safer than regular cars.

"Everybody's concerned about the electrical side, but could you imagine if we tried to bring gasoline out today as a motor fuel?" Peterson said.

What the heck is a "Mild" Hybrid???

5-4-2004 GM Delivers First Full-Size Hybrid Pickup

DETROIT - General Motors Corp. delivered the industry's first full-size hybrid pickup Monday to Miami-Dade County, one of 50 such vehicles expected to be added to the county's fleet.

The trucks feature a V-8 engine and four-speed automatic transmission coupled with hybrid technology that delivers 10 percent to 12 percent better fuel economy than GM's conventional half-ton pickups.

The Silverado is considered a "mild" hybrid by industry standards. GM, the world's largest automaker, has said its advanced hybrids ? those that can achieve a fuel-economy improvement of up to 35 percent ? are not scheduled to reach showrooms until 2007.

In addition to improvements in fuel economy and emissions, GM's first hybrid pickups ? the Silverado as well as the GMC Sierra ? feature four 120-volt, 20 amp electrical auxiliary power outlets under the rear seat of the cab and in the pickup bed.

For now, the trucks are available only for fleet customers. Mild-hybrid versions of the Silverado and Sierra are expected to be available to retail customers this fall.

Pricing hasn't been announced, but hybrids for now cost more than conventional vehicles.

Regenerative braking to charge the batteries. Engine cuts off when idling and runs off battery.

not really, considering the licensing agreement was done a month or two ago and ford already has working hybrids.
