In a recent article ("The Illegal Immigration Threat," DefenseWatch, Jan. 14, 2004), I talked about a 19-year old illegal alien who used a bogus green card to enlist in the Army, and how the Army was going to help facilitate getting him citizen status. (The Army's efforts did result in that soldier being sworn in as a U.S. citizen.) Little did I know at the time that that soldier was literally just the latest tip on a monolithic iceberg.

Let me share with you excerpts from the Denver Post article and my varied reactions to them:

The Denver Post article reported:
"[T]he citizenship of 16,031 members of the Army, Air Force, Navy and Marines is listed as 'unknown.' That's about one in 100 active-duty military members who might be U.S. citizens, legal immigrants - or just about anybody else."

An army of mercenaries and hired illegal aliens...

I'm sure soldiers whom actually 'believe' in their nation has no chance against a nation whose armed forces include stealth planes, night vision sensors, unnaturalized soldiers, and the latest gadget gizmo available.

they are fighting for a country they want to be part of...what's so new about that.
Every fighting force in history was made up of soldiers newly assimilated into a republic, nation, or empire.

I'm surprised the writer of the article didn't say, "better they die in Iraq than our boys and girls..."

bad bad

Illegal immigrants demand benefits, people complain that how greedy these bastards are, they don't pay any tax or contribute to society. Now that some illegal immigrants are contributing to society, people are again complaining. It never stops.

That doesn't really bother me. I mean, what better way to become a citizen of a country? They're paying their dues to be a part of something that many of us were handed at birth.

Seems like a win-win situation.

Well, both of those things can be true. There are obviously more than two types of illegal immigrants. The people who lump them all together are simply idiots and can be dismissed out of hand.

Hey, if someone wants to come to America, learn English, and is willing to get shot at for America... why not let them become citizens? I think they should have to enlist for at least 4 years, but other than that...

As long as they do really good background checks I would agree.

Bingo! I wondered how long it would be before someone brought up the security issue. Being a member of the military is one of the easiest and quickest ways of getting your hands on classified information.

The problem arises with HOW do you check out some one who is from abroad especially when they use false documentation?
