A student was recently mugged on campus at night resulting in multiple broken bones

And I automatically assumed that the victim was male because I figured it was below the average mugger to attack a female so violently. Worse yet, I expressed this opinion to a peer without thinking about the consequences. Ignoring any previous posts of mine, how much of a chauvinist and/or sexist does that make me appear to be? I'm afraid word of this will make its way around.

Seriously, if you don't put any stats in strength you don't go wandering around in the dark without some kind of protection.

When I was in college, almost every on campus crime involved a black male perpetrator and an asian (male or female) victim. There were signs around campus specifically warning asian students to be careful at night.

Patterns and stereotypes exist. What makes it not racist/sexist is recognizing that correlation does not imply causation.

When I discovered that the criminal was very short and small, I automatically assumed the victim to be an Asian male as well. I don't know who the victim actually is so I may be way off. The perpetrator wasn't black, however.

Regarding the op, I was more referring to the idea that mugging a woman is more morally fucked up than mugging a man. On ATOT I'm the kind of guy that would decry anti-male discrimination with pride, but when faced with the situation in real life I find myself regressing to me inner white knight. I'm kind of confused.

I would assume the victim is male too.

Just like when I hear about someone getting raped, I assume it is a female.

It doesn't really make sense to talk about the morality of choosing your mugging victim considering that the act of mugging is immoral in itself.

Heck, just for fun....you could make the argument that it's better to choose female mugging victims. A male victim might be more likely to fight back and get stabbed/shot/etc.

So punching a woman in the face and a guy in the face is the same to you? You'd just as easily beat a woman as a man?

Bah, wasn't think about violence. I wasn't thinking about a non-violent robbery. Violence is different because the same guy can generally inflict more violence on a woman than a man.
 
If I tell you someone was mugged and beaten and your response is, "Jesus, how's he doing?" my immediate assumption is that you're the mugger because how else could you know the gender of the victim?
