A storm knocks out the street lights...how do YOU pass through them...

Assume it's a normal 4 way intersection, with left turn lanes at all four points. Lights are completely dead, not even blinking red. The lights have been there for years, so they aren't newly placed.

How do you drive through the intersection -

Do you:

a) drive through the intersection with reckless abandon
b) cautiously approach the intersection, and proceed through if the coast is clear
c) act like a reasonable intelligent, alert, and considerate human being and come to a complete stop treating it like it was a stop sign

The reason I ask is because have been out of power for about 6 hours. A storm knocked out the street lights and I had to drive to work this morning. I live in dinky little town with a WHOPPING three sets of street lights. About 1/2 the people that I saw at the intersections would come to a complete stop and treat it like it was a simple 4 way stop sign. The other half just plowed through it, either not caring to stop, or flat out not even noticiing that the lights were out.

Almost got T-boned twice in a matter of seconds by people not stopping.

It sounds like many of the people in your small town are idiots. You come to a complete stop at a light that is blinking red and obey the rules as if you were at a 4-way. Don't people realize that they are placing their lives and the lives of others at risk when they drive like idiots?

I do the rolling stop thing. Reason being that if someone behind me becomes confused and I need to get out of the way, there is less inertia to overcome if I need to scoot.

I treat them like a stop sign. Never trust other drivers; it's likely that they'll act like idiots at the most inopportune times.

Idiots, yes, but Vi isn't talking about flashing lights, rather no lights.

Yeh, this is complete blackout. Not even blinking reds. I wouldn't have so much of a problem with people blowing through them if it was in a rather busy area that was frequented by many people that weren't very familiar with the roads/lights.

But where I'm at, 99/100 people that are passing through these lights do it every day, or very close to that. Very, very, very few people that would be blowing through them could use the excuse that "they didn't know they were working".

These lights have been up for years.

Perhaps your town is divided into 2 sets of people, those who drink bottle water, and those who drink the local water! Sounds like some lead poisoning to me! 😀

LOL! We buy water from Culligan because the local water tastes so horrible!😎

Around here, if the traffic signals are non-functional, you are required to treat the intersection as if it were a 4-way stop.

4-way stop.

We just had a big storm and the traffic lights were out on one of the main streets (3 lanes in each direction). The people on the side streets were backed up solid because no one on the main street stopped - no one. I guess they figured a big road trumps a side street. Luckily for me the traffic report on the radio mentioned the problem and I took an alternate route to avoid it.

Come to a complete stop, look both ways and then tear through with one foot on the gas and one hand on the horn 😉

Nah, I would just do it as a stop sign.

In the words of my sainted mother, "Always expect other drivers to do the stupidest thing possible." 😀

I stop at blinking red lights and go when it's safe.

4-way stop. A couple days ago I was in the car and the person in front of me almost got tboned by a guy who ran a red light. The light had been green for quite awhile and the guy in front was just going through (speed limit 25) and some guy came blazing down the interesction at at least 35-40. Guy in front of me slammed on his breaks and just barely missed him.

Should be a 4-way stop, however I have noticed SUV/Truck people just blast through them even going around those that stopped in front of them.

I have my own ways of dealing with those people 🙂
