Another issue is whether a degreed professional could even find such a menial job if they wanted it, especially in this environment. There is the whole issue of overqualification. If you are the hiring manager at Wal-Mart, McDonalds, etc. and you see someone with an advanced degree applying for a cashier/fry cook position, why waste the time and money to hire them when you know they are going to quit as soon as something better comes along?

Alternatively, one other concern has to be the possibility that that person might be so talented that they'll make you look stupid and end up displacing you from your position. That's probably a larger concern in an office environment, but it must come across people's minds nonetheless.

Let's hope that our government focuses less on trying to cut unemployment benefits and more on figuring out what the federal government can do to open up middle class jobs for Americans, such as deporting all of the H-1B and L-1 visa holders and forbidding the outsourcing of manufacturing and knowledge-based jobs. (I know, it's not going to happen because the rich and naive free market dogmatists wouldn't like that and we need to keep the rich happy or, or, well or else.)

That is why it has been said, A people hire B people, B people hire C people, and down the road. It is an act of self preservation. You don't want to hire someone that will soon be capable of replacing you. In most cases when this process in interrupted, those people end up getting sacrificed.

Only good leaders are willing to hire those at equal or better skill levels.
