a stand alone PC.. what services arent needed?

hi all..
my pc is a stand alone and only connected to the net via a DSL modem.

i cant claim to be networking guy, but i do understand the very basics of it though. however, im a bit hesitant to do the following,
i was reviewing my automatically starting process and noticed some of them to be network related and you'd need to be part of a network infrastructure to make use of them..

so can some one feed me in in the following process if i opted to disable them at the boot up!

1. DHCP client

2. DNS client

3. secondary logon (Enables starting processes under alternate credentials. If this service is stopped, this type of logon access will be unavailable. If this service is disabled, any services that explicitly depend on it will fail to start.)

4. Telephony (Provides Telephony API (TAPI) support for programs that control telephony devices and IP based voice connections on the local computer and, through the LAN, on servers that are also running the service.)

5. Terminal Services (Allows multiple users to be connected interactively to a machine as well as the display of desktops and )

6. WMDM PMSP ??? heck no description on this one int he comp. mgmt!! it uses the file MsPMSPSv.exe !!!!!

Do *NOT* do anything on the BV site. The blackviper mumbo-jumbo has been so completely debunked here and in other forums I can't believe anyone would still give out that information. You have a modern system - the OS pages out what it doesn't need, and there's no significant difference in doing most of these operations.
 
I didn't follow the blackviper guide, but it is best to use common sense.

Have your computer switched on as normal - do what you usually do on it.

Go into services,
Anything (aw come on, use your brain) that you think your system might not use, set to manual.
anything that is running but is set to manual, change to automatic,
anything that intimates remote registry or wifi (if you don't use it) disable.
 
I do NOT suggest you follow that advice. Microsoft made it that way for a reason. If you disable remote registry, for example, you'll not be able to remotely connect to your registry (with another computer, say) to fix problems. You might belittle that now, but if a problem happens, you want to have as many support options open to you as possible.

Wifi - same thing. Imagine you buy WiFi it in a year, and you've since forgotten you disabled it. What a PITA.

And this very site has had mountains of benchmarks that all agreed -- the BV site, and disabling unused services, is an absolute waste of time, whether it's a low memory PC with 512M or whether it's a 4GB server.

There's nothing gained, and there's a significant possibility of problems.

If you feel for some crazy reason you *must* do this, at least write down everything you change so you can undo it if and when problems start.
 
If you look at 'services' as programs, which is pretty much what they are, running in the background, then most of the time you might want to go into msconfig and disable various startup items.
This is the same with services.
Dclive is right that it can be a pain if you don't remember which services/proggies you have disabled, and the savings in resources won't be astronomical, but if you are trying to streamline the system, then go for it.

I read a lot of posts at several forums & never came across any that said BV is bad. Sorry if I gave out bad info. It is at majorgeeks.com which is a reputable download site I thought.
 
i havent really done a thing yet. but i was planning to ... once i get back from work today....

I've gotta agree with dclive, especially with Vista. I've learned my lesson the hard way, a few times. I just don't learn😉
