The only series ever to do it is a cliche of itself? ROFL!!!! WTF, is GoT supposed to simply abandon the unique style and become a cliche of 10,000 other fantasy series because being like itself is an even bigger cliche? Did you even bother to try to think that through?

Totally forgot about this thread, so a late reply is in order.

My point is that they aren't all that different. In standard fantasy cliche, the good guys win, over and over again. In GoT, the good guys lose, over and over again. To the point where it's expected. It was quite annoying in the books because you spend so many pages reading about someone who ultimately dies a meaningless death. When that keeps happening it loses its shock value and just feels cheap. LoTR also has this problem but in reverse. Then again, it was written over half a century ago.

No, the good guys don't lose over and over.

Tyrion nailed Tywin
Joffrey is dead
Arya is gaining power
Zombie Jon will be back better than ever

Do you even understand that any good guy/bad guy book/movie/series is perforce a binary system? The good guys win or the bad guys win, those are the only two outcomes. In every other fantasy series the good guys win, period. In GOT the good guys lose a lot, but win enough so that even the biggest baddest villains are not safe. Anything can happen. It is almost completely unique in that regard and it takes a monumental level of cluelessness to view it was a cliche because it's the only series where the good guys are not guaranteed to win in the end.

Do you know what's going to happen? Are the good guys going to lose for sure? Will the white walkers wipe out humanity? Will Cersei and zombie Gregor regain power and grind their enemies under their heels? Will Danny gain control of her dragons and conquer to rule as a tyrant, will she unite with Jon to save humanity or will she get killed in season 6? You don't have the slightest idea and neither do I. There is not the slightest guarantee that either side will prevail in the end and it could go either way. Despite my hatred of Martin's writing pace he has managed to successfully balance the good/evil thing on the razors edge for 4000+ pages to a degree than nobody has any idea which side will win and still there are numbskulls who view it as a cliche. Un-freaking-believable.

Surprised nobody has bumped this with the latest Ian McShane and Sophie Turner likely spoilers...

McShane:
Basically says his character resurrects The Hound
Turner:
Basically confirmed she does not die in season 6

^Deals with Varys and deep dives into his actions in the epilogue of ADWD in particular and broadly throughout the seasons. It could explain why the fAegon storyline was dropped. If it's anything like the video speculates it would add up to 5 episodes of time to the series by itself at the very least.

Well, McShane playing that character does not surprise anyone. I wonder if he resurrects the Hound or merely provides medical and spiritual aid to Sandor that helps him in leaving The Hound part of himself behind. Either way, not too big a deal, most people were of the mind that Sandor wasn't going to croak.

Same with Sansa, not exactly an earth-shaking revelation. If I had to pick 5 current characters likely to be standing at the end she'd be one of them.

It's old but surprised I had never watched this one.

Does anyone watch Fallon any more? I used to record the show and maybe a few times a week watch the monologue. But since Colbert has been on I've realized just how much Fallon sucks ass. Colbert is soooo much better it's embarrassing. I can't remember the last time I watched any of his show.

Another Trailer for GoT Season 6

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=puAeEX2aiWE

there is a shot of unGregor about to pull a Faith Militant's Head off

And a Kingsguard killing one of Ned's bannermen rather easily at the ToJ during the Flashback scene and Drogon seems to have gotten even bigger. WTF that's a BFD!!!

High Sparrow: If you spill blood in this holy place...

Jamie Lannister: ...The gods won't mind, they spill more blood than the rest of us combined

Not as good as the "I choose violence" but it's a very good shot at the piety that people who are really interested in power project in fiction and real life.

Yup.

Colbert all the way.

And then James Corden (his celeb car karaoke vids are very fun to watch--no surprise they've gone viral).

Now that's a good trailer.

You have to give credit to a nice corrupt religion, they're the only faction that could get me to root for Cersei and zombie Gregor.

I'm Melisandreing this thread since it's the only one that allows open discussion.

So, the reveal was finally made official in the second episode of season 6.

Jon Snow is freed from his oath. The way the NW reacts to him in the preview of the next episode, combined with the following bit of info indicates that they don't see him as Lord Commander any longer:
kitirkf2.jpg

Kit/Jon is wearing Stark colors, likely indicating that Sansa makes him a legitimate Stark or Robb may have left a will to do so (less likely IMO)

The preview for the next episode: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y685gVGRQ98

Pay attention to NW reacting to Jon and Tormund's words pretty much confirm it, he is not their Lord Commander any more. Even if he wasn't freed from the oath, the NW no longer see him as Jon Snow.

I have to admit, Kit is a very good liar, had me going there for a minute. Take a look at this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=03ka06Ih8zE

In his EW exclusive interview, he had this to say to the fans:

I don't understand why people think Roose is softer than Ramsay. Not defending Ramsay but had he not killed Roose, Roose would have killed Ramsay. The only difference is Ramsay would have likely killed Walda and her child even if it had been a daughter.

In TV series, I believe Robb did indeed decree Jon to be a Stark (before the Red Wedding) and left it in some sort of will or document in case he died. It's been a while since I watched that season so my memory may not be correct.

I envy you, I've enjoyed re-watching GOT multiple times already but nothing beats watching it for the first time. Also you are experiencing it all as a concentrate while my experience was diluted by weeks between episodes and months of off-seasons.

I started to watch the show first before picking up the books. I was lucky to know nothing about it when I started to watch. The magic and unnatural elements of the show are on a tight leash, often the rules for these events are laid out long in advance and explain why they are rare and the specific things needed for them to occur to begin with.

Season 4 is the peak of "court intrigue" and you've got some truly epic moments to look forward to, enjoy it! Some of it I would describe as best TV moments I ever watched. Don't be surprised if you start using GOT terminology when interacting with friends and family.

It's funny, I felt the same way but despite watching the show a few times already, I never quite found it, I must have confused it with some open questions from the books. The books and the show make it clear that Robb was fond of Jon.

I love that despite the complexity, the show manages to pull off parallels like this:

Episode 3 of season 6 predictions and spoilers. Translated from Spanish, video pulled down by HBO again this week:

The Wall:
Melissandre ask what he saw while he was dead. Jon says nothing. Meli says that Stannis might not be Azor Ahai after all but Jon. He think this is very weird and understand nothing. Davos is freaking out, and ask what happen.
Everybody goes to the yard, "you are a god, etc...".
Sam:
On the boat, Sam is about to puke, they need to go to Sam house because Old Town don't allow chicks. His father is an asshole, but mom and sis are good people.
TOJ:
The conversation we know already. Dayne fucks everybody and beat Ned, but Howland kill Arthur in the back. A woman is screaming; Bran somehow scream Dad. Ned turn around but sees nothing. And the 3xEyeCrow says: "We will go back here another time" <NdT: Motherfucker...>
Vaes Dorak
Apparently half chapter about telling that widows go there, the rules and so on, to Dae.
Meeren:
A woman with a sick child have info about the Harpy. Varis offers health and a ship full of silver if she tells something. Everybody is conspiring against Meeren (Yunkai and the rest). Grayworm said that the best is attack directly, leaving Meeren undefended even.
King's Landing:
Qyburn is just talking with the kid. Tells Cersei or Jaime that he just "tweak" the mountain a little bit to improve it. The children are the new little birds, they were good with Varis, and they are also good with Qyburn. Jaime says that the Mountain should go to the Baelor Sept to blast the High Sparrow head. The council is talking, Olena, Pircell, Kevan, the guy that sing in bravos, etc.... Kevan is the hand of the king. Cersei and the Mountain crash the council, and the conversation goes no where.
Tommen ask the HS to left Cersei come back to see Mircela, HS says no sinner allowed. And that she need to purge her sin before the seven.
Arya:
Who are you? Nobody, x 200. ... and then Who WERE you? I was Arya Stark, who do you want to kill? Why didn't you kill the dog the hound? ; again with Jaquen Who are you? Nobody x200. Arya pass the test of the annoying god, got a bowl with magic water, and her eyesight come back.
Winterfell:
Why are you here Umber? Aren't you loyal to the Stark?.
I was, but Jon Snow have an army of wildling that are going to fuck my lands.
Kneel and I will help you
No
Wut??? How I'm going to trust you?
You will because I'm bringing you Osha and Rickon.
The Wall again:
Four hanging people, Bower Marsh, Harwick, Thorne, and Olly (yes!). Before hanging them, Jon talk a bit with them. Marsh: You should be dead!, Harwick: Please tell my family I died honorably. Thorne: I would do this again!. Olly: (says nothing). Cut the main rope, all four fall down, last frame is Olly dying. Jon give the Lord Commander cape to Ed. Ed ask "what should I do with his?" Jon: "Whatever you want, because my watch has ended".
