A Song of Fire and Ice series question (books)

Right now I'm in book 3 and I've stopped reading cause it's gotten really, really depressing. So many characters you grow to love just get killed off (realism for sure, but damn if it doesn't suck to read). Does it get any brighter? I don't want to know specifics (no plot details plesae), just a yes or no that will keep me reading.

Yeah I want to keep reading but man it's like watching a train wreck. It's terrible, but you can't look away, and the more you look the worse you feel.

You must have just hit the Wedding...

😛

Book 4 was a bit "brighter" I guess, but Martin can't be said to write books that are "happy"

I never did make it through book 4... Too much traveling and jumping from one story to the other... I just got tired of it.

Wonder how you would have felt if he kept the other half of the characters in?

I'm not going to say anything since you're not finished yet, but if you are seriously considering stopping, then maybe you should. You don't read these books for happy rainbow dwarven virgin princess deflowering endings.

On another note, I need book 5! I wanna read about Jon and Bran and Tyrion and Dynaeres (sp?). For those of you who have finished, don't forget to check the sample page on www.georgerrmartin.com . There was a tyrion chapter last time I checked.

EDIT: typo

That is precicely why I like the books. Lots of characters die. And he writes from the POV of the 'evil' characters, which I usually find more interesting than the 'good' characters. Although I did skip all the chapters of the stupid kids who can talk to their pet dire wolfs and go on some silly quest to the north. I hate reading stories about children out on a quest, I fvcking hate it!

Other than that, I like the books.

Hahaha yeah. I actually stopped a chapter or 2 after it. My first impression was "DAMN!! I can't believe he (the author) just did that!".

If you want something a bit brighter ASoIaF-wise, check out the short stories "the hedge knight" and "the sworn shield". They were printed in the two "Legends anthology with a bunch of other writers, including a short story in "the Gunslinger" series by S. King and a rather amusing short story based on Granny Weatherwax by Terry Pratchett.

Oh, and some of his short story collections such as "Tuf Voyaging" are a bit brighter in tone as well.

ok i just read that chapter

damnit i want things to hurry up

there is so much stuff going on and the sh!t is really about to hit the fan

Though he can't really be said to be the bad guy . . .

(i've read the first three, I'd like to read the fourth.

The wedding was a hell of shock, for sure.

I'm not reading book 4 until book 5 comes out, then I'll read them concurrently. Totally lameass way that Martin and his publishers decided to break things up by characters instead of by timeline. It makes absolutely no sense.
