Lets just make linux the main os system, have somebody develop a really awesome office suite, set up many applications (free of course) for both the regular user and the server admins...

problem solved :p

Now, onto the RIAA :p

(of course I'm just being a dork here, but considering the cost of linux ($0) to win2k server ($lotta bucks) and the usage of both of them, I'm damn glad I have linux)

Now, you see it's not that I'm a tightwad or anything, but I don't have that much money (dj investment and truck kinda broke my stride) but I just want to be able to test certain things out to see how they work (can't read outta a manual and learn, hands on is the way to go) and linux allows you to use it w/out having to pirate software and still have total functionality of what you want to do...

:)

They don't care if it's pirate or not ... they just want their big fat paycheck in the end of the month!

Linux is then a no-no ... sad, but true.

There already is everything you are talking about in *nix.

But the catch is, you need to have some intelligence to use it. That is where it fails in the general population.

So very true unfortunately...

i think ms is a lot more worried about piracy than say... linux people, so your solution wouldn't really solve the problem since the whole point of stopping piracy is to get more people to buy the software, not stop using it altogether.

Well I was just kidding about the solution...

All this post was about is to bring up the fact that if you put ms and linux together for server purposes, I think they can each perform very well, but one's nothing and the other is a lot... so what would you choose? I figured out what I'm gonna use ;)

I have a real solution for the cd piracy.

with each CD tehre should come a voucher which the purchasers can use to buy a set number of tickets (say 2). This way, everyone who brought a CD will be able to buy tickets a day or two before all the people that didn't buy the cd. This might solve the scalper problem too.

i've never bootlegged an OS. Now adobe software is another thing. $500 for a photo editing program? get real. They wonder why people do it. But it really doesn't matter how much they charge, there will be a thief regardless of the price. For instance, we have a dryer sheet thief at work, probably working for us on third shift. The dryer sheets are ~$2.25, and they still take about a box a week. I dunno.

photoshop is damned expensive.... elements is at a much better price and has enough for you if you're just begining i think (not sure about the mulitple history undo tho... and no actions).

I really don't know if i could ever use Linux as a main OS. I'm just generally too lazy to do fuss w/ it as a desktop.... i've been too windowed :) Altho as a server, which is what i'm doing now.. definately using linux tho... you can't do win2k on a p200 w/32 mb of ram confrotably... unless there's a GUI-less mode i don't know about.

server wise?? in my company our NT boxes are known for their stability while the Unix/Linux guys are in every weekend doing maintenance while once every 6 months NT comes in. The old NT sucks and Linux rules approach doesnt always work.

You know that Microsoft software is overpriced. Look at the revenues vs the investment.

I think the real solution to piracy is to let the CUSTOMER set the price. There is plenty of software that I would be willing to pay, say half the price the company wants. Since they won't take half they get none.

For example I was looking for a video editing program. I found WinProducer and it did exactly what i wanted. I looked at the price and they wanted $100 for it. It was not worth $100 to me. It was worth $50 absolute max (to me). So instead of them getting $50 they got $0. I later found VirtualDub which also does what I wanted and it is free, so I used it.

That's really just sh*t talking ...

A friend of mine whose company is a really big webhoster/web programming provider has 1 Unix (or Linux?) server and many, many WinNT/2K servers.
He wil never, ever go linux/unix again.

1. It takes almost 2 days to set the *nix server up vs. ~2 hours for a Win server
2. If there is a security hole in win (there are lots - he admits) an update is available within hours and the installation is a matter of minutes vs. if there is a security hole in *nix he never hears about it or it takes a bitch to install the update.
3. If an attacker brings down his server it's a matter of minutes (up to 2 hours) to get the win machines back on line vs. probably reinstalling *nix (2 days) or at least having problems for half a day ...

=> Ask him about *nix and he will rip your throat
