ok, there's some registry errors on my Server which causes the machine not to load up Windows at all. Is there ANY utility which will allow me to boot up the system and let me edit the registry only??

Hoping for a quick reply from all the smart people here.....

Have you already tried chkdsk from the recovery console? Doesn't allow you to modify the registry, but it may fix enough to boot the machine.

Chkdsk is a good idea; another is a few steps I documented in my .sig's URL - they detail how to copy the four registry files from the repair directory, which (if you are having a registry issue) will allow the machine to boot with you original registry, in which case you can then do all kinds of things.

Regedt32 is used to edit the registry. Under XPSP1 and Win2k3 this will automatically attempt to fix corrupt registries....

You can do a parallel install, and then load and edit the registry from the parallel install to your heart's content.

What happens when you try to get R.C. to start?

No, I'm sure there must be a way to access the registry from boot up without loading windows. I dont want to do a paralell install.

When I try to get R.C, the system says a HD cannot be found, which is preposterous, because Windows Server 2000 loads up to the flash screen and then I get the error msg for the registry fault

Then you need to hit F6 when prompted (when booting from CD) and insert your floppy disk with your disk controller's drivers. Then RC will work.

You could boot up using Bart's PE disk. (Go to www.nu2.nu/pebuilder)

Hopefully this will "see" your hard drive. If not, it will boot up anyway and bring up a familar Windows-like environment.

If it sees your hard drive, you will be able to run regedit.

I would also run a Scandisk on it (within Bart's PE). I solved a BSOD just by running the chkdsk utility (cleared an error on the HD).

Just my .02

Bart's PE is built using Windows drivers (unless you add drivers to it.... he's got easy ways to add 3-4). If the Windows you use to built Bart's PE won't boot your server and see the hard drive, Bart's PE won't either (aside from those 3-4 drivers you can easily add, or you can hack your own in there too).

The F6 during bootup is the normal way to see the hard drive in the RC if you don't have in-box drivers for your storage controller.
