A new aids vaccine has been about 30% effective in a study of 16000 in thailand.

This will provide a new direction for research around the world.
this is just great.

Is the difference of 0.2875% in infection rate in a sample size of 16000 really significant or is it noise?

The infection rate was 0.6375% for folks with the vaccine and 0.925% for those who got the placebo. So 99%+ of the study participants avoided contracting AIDS w/o the vaccine necessarily having any effect at all. While vaccine research is important it appears there are already highly effective methods of preventing AIDS transmission available today.

I wonder how they established controls. Though the article says both groups were "average" risk, it's certainly possible the placebo group simply had a slightly larger percentage of people who participate in higher risk activities.

IIRC...they dont actually infect new people... these are already people with aids.
however the many strains of aids allows new infections to be trackable... they would be looking for the specific strain which they were exposed to.
but maybe in thailand they do infect real healthy people.

Sadly, this IS the ultimate way to avoid aids. I don't get why Aids is even such a big issue. If people had half a brain they would not catch it. People just have to stop having sex with every 2nd girl you see.

like that's so easy to do because when someone is infected with HIV they have it tattooed on their forehead.

Like they would be able to get the vaccine anyway. It will cost about 5 years worth of pay for them.

Governments and NGOs will finance the distribution and administration of vaccine.
