Gardener, you're as learning disabled as some of the others. I am not saying information that gets publicity can be potentially harmful is NEW, I don't have fake (or real) outrage over it, and I am not participating in anything... especially a "leak", lol.

For people like yourself, here's my thesis, verbatim, as posted in my first paragraph: "I am posting this to make a point about the issue of sensitive information, and how the information wars that exist today often compromise the safety and security of our soldiers in places like Iraq."

If you don't believe that certain non-secret info can be harmful to American soldiers, feel free to EXPLAIN why. Because simply saying I am "silly" is pretty weak and doesn't exactly make you look informed. I can guarantee you a lot of important people in the military do not think the subject is silly.

LOL oh knows the bad guys might find out the troops are looking for trip wires. I hope no one was watching the segement about troops eating food or it might get out that our troops have to have food. It was right before the news story on if bear sh!t in the woods.

You first :D

Considering this topic and article was lifted straight from a Listserve discussion for Intelligence professionals, (whose job it is to think about such matters) it doesn't surprise me that so many people around here cannot grasp the concepts.

For future reference, if it's over your head, stay away from the thread.

Yeah, silly string is an intelligent subject and is over my head.

So, since you are so informed and want a discussion why don't you throw out an example of how to stop such a problem instead of being such an ass insulting everyone with your "your too ignorant to discuss this issue" BS attitude?

So what's your answer to the problem, censor the press?? Shoot reporters? Or just continue to act like your more patriotic then everyone else?

Why don't I throw out an example of how to stop the problem? Well, I thought that was implied in my OP. The main idea is recognizing the problem, and being aware that information has a lot of power, often the power to hurt our military. Care needs to be taken. So what can be done specifically?

Well, education within the military and those closely associated with the military is key. I know that the subject is attracting more attention and briefs, memos, and training on the issue is becoming more common. Also, the media must excerise a certain level of citizenship and common sense when it come to the matter... and that sorta goes along with just being more conscious of what people are saying and writing.

There is no easy, cure-all answer to this. My purpose was to raise awareness. Contrary to your first sentence, this is not an issue of silly string or how it is used. It's an issue of non-secret information affecting soldiers. Although my example may be imperfect, if you cannot get the gist of the root problem, then troll another thread.

I think I understand the root problem but I don't see what can be done about it. If it's not secret then it's going to get out and there is NOTHING anybody can do about it.

OP,

Get upset with me if you like ... but I'm wondering what the point of your posting is.

(Maybe I'm wrong, but ...) It seems pretty common sense that non-classified tactical information distribution could have a negative impact for troops. This is why there are still debates about the necessity of embedding civilian news with combat troops.

Are you suggesting ways that this can be helped? How? Or just venting about the dangers that some news stories can cause? (The silly string seems a very poor example. It doesn't do a good job illustrating heightened danger.)

I don't see any way to "Fix" the problem. The only thing I can see is that news editors need to consider the implications of any such information and use their own judgment on how long to sit on a story before publishing it. I imagine to some degree they are already doing this. It may not be emough ... but IMHO it's far better then 100% government controled access to wartime news.

If there are other ways to fix this great. let's get a discussion and brainstorming going on that. ... though I think at this point a new thread would be needed.

I thought your mom told you about this over Thanksgiving, using secret Indian handsignals.

For the sake of national security, stop now.

This is OLD news.

Apparently you still haven't gotten the memo.

The issue of information, and how it CAN and DOES affect troops in combat, is never old news.

While I see where you are coming from, I think you misunderstood. I saw this exact same thing on the news like months ago. This is an old news story.
