I just finished watching 'A Scanner Darkly' and was wondering if you guys could explain the significance of the following scene to me:

After breaking up with Donna Hawthorne at her apartment, Bob Arctor picks up some random chick, brings her to his house, has sex with her, falls asleep. The chick falls asleep on his bed as well. In the middle of the night Arctor wakes up and think for a second that the chick has died. He leans over trying to grab something from the nightstand, but then realizes the chick is breathing normally. He falls back asleep.

Later at his monitoring station Arctor is reviewing recording of himself and stops on a face-torso shot of the chick he brought home. He puts the holo projection from the tapes in front of him and as he juggles the shuttle back and forth, the chick morphs into Donna and back.

What the hell was that? Was it his mind breaking down and morphing random girl into Donna, or was it something else? What was the significance of this scene?

Thanks.

Interesting question!

Wishful thinking/hallucination combined with a little foreshadowing about what his real problem is, which is that Donna is using him.

I thought it was supposed to be showing that his mind had become so bent that he thought Donna was some random chick.
