Listened to it. PRetty cool.
I have heard a lot about Satriani but this is the first time I have heard him.

Sounded a bit too psychedelic for me.

well, his music is very emotional. he is also very good with sound design, so he usually has top grade tones..... i would say his music is more cerebral than psychedelic. however, i dont think it would be a good idea to take acid and then listen to songs like "is there love in space" or"if I could fly"

which is his best album ? This is great for work-at-home music. I've been using Evanescence's more soulful and slow stuff, but this is just as good.

see him at g3. him and vai are amazing in concert (and fvck all the "guitar gurus" that say they put no emotion into their songs).

I started on Crystal Planet and got HOOKED. I highly recommend checking out Crystal Planet and The Extremist, my two personal faves. I wasn't feeling some of the tracks on Engines of Creation, but man, this latest one (Is There Love In Space? for those looking for it) is AWESOME. There's even a track with ::gasp:: vocals! I damn near lost control of my car when I heard a human voice on a Satch track!

Live in San Francisco would be a good choice.

yeah he kinda lost me on engines of creation, too. seems like he wasted too much creativity on the production and didn't have enough left over for songs.

that squeeky melody about 9 seconds into the clip is awesome. Me and my friend greg are going to try and learn it on violin and harmonize each other.

he is using a whammy pedal, if that's any help to you. that's how he gets those super fast pitch sweeps up to each note.

edit: i'll have to go pick this CD up, i've just been absorbing "strange beautiful music" the last week or so.

yea, i know, (thanks) I think i have the same pedal he uses because I've gotten almost identical sounds out of the one I have, which is the 2003 Red Digitech Whammy pedal.

chances are he plays one of the "vintage" ones, which are supposedly desirable. why, i have no idea. like you said, you can get identical sounds out of the new ones, so why someone would pay extra for an old one, i have no idea.

i want one (new or old) really bad, but i need a Micro-Synth more.

Crystal Planet would be another.

petrucci, vai, and satriani all have their upsides, Satriani plays with the most soul, imho, vai with the most flair, and Petrucci, with absolutely the most precision.

I prefer his earlier stuff. My favorite is Surfing With The Alien. You can't go wrong with The Extremist, Flying In A Blue Dream or The Beautiful Guitar. 😀

That's a great album. Satch, Petrucci, Vai, Malmsteen, Clapton, Johnson, Morse...they are a source of inspiration and frustration to me all the time. I've been playing 3 years, and I always feel inspired and depressed when a listen to them.

Great album, though! I would recommend it to almost anyone.

Born on July 15, 1956, in Westbury, NY, and raised in the nearby town of Carle Place...
holy sh!t that's literally the next town over... I can't believe all these famous people were born here... Billy Joel grew up in a house across the street too...

I'm by no means an anti-guitar god individual. Hell I was the first one in line to get Yngwie tickets. But I've never been impressed with Satch. Many of his songs are literally nothing more than solos over top of a simplistic rythm track, set there for the sole purpose of him to solo over. It's almost like karaoke except with a guitar. He can play guitar exceptionally well, but he can't write a song to save his life, except for a few tunes.

no offense, this just means you are missing a large part of his music and perspective and music in general. What is blues? What is Jazz? Yes, satch does do a lot of soloing, but damn, its so melodic and that level of melody isn't found in much of mainstream music. Satch will be the first to tell you that most of his tracks aren't "songs" but "jams" or little "pieces"

The song type architecture is just one of many formats that a musician can use to develop a piece of music with. What about musicals, epics, jams, ballads, fugues, etc. Satch can write songs to save his life, but thats not what he is trying to do.

also, alot of his music is spontaneous.

If you enjoy that piece you should listen to classical music like bach. Its the same thing with different instruments.
