He could replace the screen himself if he was willing, it doesn't look that hard and it's definitely worth a shot...

did you ever try crack open a 3rd gen ipod? the instruction can look so simple sometimes....

i have a 4th gen iPOD, and i don't know where to find instructions to get it opened, and no, i haven't tried google, but i don't want to open it up myself anyways. i think i'll go down to apple and have them fix it.

try that. make a puppy face if they don't initially cave in to your request. just say that you noticed that it was broken or something. i'd definitely see what they can do for you.
