RIP, buddy :(

Dropped 3" (that's inches, folks) onto ceramic tile. Three measely inches. Totally spiderwebbed the entire corner of the screen. Still works (the screen protector is holding it in place). Not eligible for a discounted upgrade until November 2010.

Sigh...glad I kept my 2G for backup...:(

Yea, I have heard that if it lands just right (or would that be wrong?) it will fracture the entire screen. Heck, Tyranicus' iPhone survived him for over a year, so it takes something special to kill the screen.

Have you considered looking up cost and requirements to replace the screen yourself?

Aren't there third party services that'll replace the screen relatively inexpensively?

Yeah, I've dropped mine dozens of times, from as high as 5 feet up on asphault, no problems. This time, three measely inches on ceramic tile, juuuuuust at the right angle, and kaput! :p I've had an iPhone since they came out and have never had a problem. Perhaps I'll look at a case for my next upgrade...

They want $199 for a screen repair, or $299 for a brand-new 3GS. The glass is being held in place by the screen protector, and everything still works, so I guess it's okay for now, just looks ghetto. I still have my 2G iPhone (which I keep for backup), so I can use that if necessary. Ho-hum :p

You might want to repair it yourself, since it seems you are very capable of doing your own programming/hacking. :)

I would try to take a great china parts website (They are very reliable), i've bought many things from them.

http://www.cnn.cn. The digitizer with class front is $70. So it might be worth it!

Hope this helps.

Yeah, I found some cheap kits on Deals Extreme or whatever that website is, but a broken 3G just sold for over $240 on fleabay, so I think I'll go that route and get a 3GS instead.

my neighbor replaced his screen he said it was pretty easy. But he is a big time mechanic, like cars and stuff. Kinda weird he does electronics too. But he said its pretty easy.

My 2G went out a car window and landed on concrete, and the screen didn't have a mark on it. I guess it all depends on how it lands.

Sorry for your loss!

Yeah it's not too bad, there are fairly inexpensive kits and stuff. But for the price they're going for on eBay, for the different I could just upgrade to a new 3GS, so I think I'm gonna go that route!

My screen survived being thrown at the wall and being slammed pretty hard face down on a desktop, but the electronics inside didn't fare so well. I have a coworker who managed to shatter his into three or four pieces by throwing it hard at concrete ground after it locked up on a call. Another coworker has one with a damaged screen because his wife threw the phone at the wall.

There are few things more frustrating than when the damned thing locks up in such a way that there's nothing you can do about it. On any other phone at least you can yank and replace the battery.

Join the club

This was last year after I had it for less than a week. Slipped out of my gym shorts as I was getting out of the car right onto the concrete.

I <3 American Express and their Clumsy Customer Protection plan. Luckily they replaced it for free.

Wow! All that damage from a 3 inch fall...

Enjoy the new 3GS, though! I was torn between paying full price to upgrade from my 3G or getting the new MBP. Well, I'm posting from the MBP so that's how that went!
