A sad day for Canada. Bill C-51 passed

Red Squirrel

When we thought it was already bad enough with the existing spying and NSA/CSIS stuff, it's going to now get worse.

Protesting will now be illegal - you will be considered a terrorist
All online activities will now be fully monitored (more than they already were)
There will be secret police watching your every move with full powers to arrest you at any time even without any proof of anything.
0 accountability.

The TPP looms, and will probably eventually pass too.

These are very dark days.

Harper needs to be impeached. I said it. I guess I'm a terrorist now.

None of this crap has ever actually stopped terrorism. This is all about controlling people, and has nothing to do with actual terrorism.

I think it's already past that point. Now we need to try to kill it. I really hope next election people wake up and stop voting liberal and PC and vote NDP. NDP will remove this bill if they win. Liberals and PCs are both a bunch of corrupts who don't have the people in mind.

Part of the problem is these major issues are not even covered by maintream media. Most people don't even know what this bill is, or what the TPP is. Two major issues that should be all over the news.

Once they neutered your gun rights, you knew the Canadian government would eventually have their way with you.

just when you're done can we keep our extra u's and metric system?

Right? That could never happen in America, because here every freedom-loving man woman and child is packing heat, which is at least 53% of the population.

Yep this bill is basically the US patriot act. It's all based on fear mongering to try to strip rights away. About half of the stuff in the charter of rights is voided by this bill.

If the government truly wanted to stop the terrorists, we would not be selling armoured vehicles to Saudi Arabia.

There is so much corruption in today's governments it's just unreal. All because of money. This is not really new though. In the Nazi Germany era we were selling metals to the nazis to make bullets, which were used on our own soldiers. It's pretty sickening when you think about it.

It's not paranoia when the threat is real. Thanks to Edward Snowden we know just how bad it really is, and the lengths governments will go to. There was always a sense of scepticism but he pretty much confirmed it. A lot of the stuff in this bill was already happening, but this just sets it more officially on paper and gives more power to the spies and other agencies. The word terrorism is just a word used by the government to describe someone they don't like. There's even a clause about impeding with the economy. For example if someone actually discovers something to replace fossil fuel, that person would most likely be a terrorist under this bill because it would threaten the oil industry (even if the replacement does not work, it's still an attempt). It would go against Harper's big oil agenda.

I don't think we'll see much happen right away with this bill, governments know how to abuse stuff in such a way that it does not steer voters away. But slowly they'll be abusing it for their own benefit.

oh, come on. that's ridiculous.

feds want to phase out fossil fuels by 2100 anyway.

now if this legislation can get rid of Elizabeth May and the Occupidiots, then I am all for it.

😉

I heard about wanting to abolish fossil fuels, I'll believe it when I see it... that or they have a secret, and they'll just replace it with something else they can have full control over. But we'll all be dead by then anyway, and the planet will be in pretty rough shape. 😛

This must be the loonie thread? 😉

Though, I do have to say that governments people do know how to abuse stuff...and if you happen to voice your concerns, you are labeled racist, sexist, idiot, and the smear campaign begins, since you aren't with the status quo, no matter how dumb something is, like "...But we have to pass the bill so that you can find out what is in it "...

Sigh.

I'm sorry Canada, that you get to deal with such retarded !@#$. Now where are Americans supposed to go to flee fascism?

Umm, this Law is from the same Party that has undone much of the Gun Control in Canada.

How does the new bill restrict public protesting?
From what I see here, some of the new laws include broadening the no fly list, make it an offense to encourage an attack, restrict movement of suspects (similar to UK patriot act law) etc.

Significant amendments to the Criminal Code including criminalization of the expression of ideas related to terrorism.

There's a clause about "unlawful protests" and "affecting the economy" That can be twisted so many ways it's not even funny. A typical application would be to stop protesters from protesting a pipe line going through their land. Those people would now be considered terrorists. Strikes are another one they'll be able to use this against.

Most strikes now days are unlawful, so those people will now be considered terrorists. Air Canada for example, went on strike and the government past legislation to make the strike illegal. Same with the teachers. The right to strike is non existent these days, and with this new law even less so. Less power to the people, more power to the corporations.

The no fly list part is also rather scary, because it's all secretive. They can put you on it and you wont even know why.

In a way I almost hope this bill gets abused so badly that it just HAS to be taken out. It needs to be bad enough that it gets the general public's attention to fight it. But governments are good at limiting their abuse to an extent that it wont lose them too many votes.
