Considering they filibustered the 9/11 First Responders bill and the Veterans' Jobs Bill and didn't suffer any politican consequences, I think they'll be fine. Their supporters don't care WHAT they do as long as they obstruct Obama.

Did we conviently leave out the fact that the bill would give United Nations oversight of how we care for people with special needs? It's a UN Bill. CRPD UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities

This is a treaty-Constitution requires two-thirds majority to approve, for very valid reasons.

That said, this is the usual GOP bullsh*t. The UN treaty is modeled upon US law, it doesn't add anything. But the United Nations is like kryptonite to a large chunk of the GOP, and too many senators are scared to death they will be challenged in a primary by a teabagger for voting for something associated with the UN.

The really sad thing was seeing a frail 90 year old former GOP senator, Presidential candidate and war hero Bob Dole, who was a huge backer of this treaty, on the Senate floor while his party colleagues shot this down. A true embarassment.

BTW a large majority of the world's nations (120+) have already ratified this treaty. The USA should be a model, not a pariah.

38 people is not a "fringe".

Yes, you really are. The majority of American Republicans are sick about what their party has become. They don't like Democrats either so they are stuck without representation.

but... but... republicans! The United States alreadys has the ADA. Are we going to bomb some country in Africa if they don't make resturaunts wheelchair accessible?

So the world is looking to the U.S. for guidance on this issue... all good and well, sign the treaty and let other countrues copy our ADA laws... but take out any language that allows the U.N. to dictate how the U.S. takes care of it's own people with disabilities.

Maybe the blind Democrats are wiling to subjugate the US to the UN.

I do not think that we should; the UN is way to political as it is to trust them with our government/laws.

LOL at a treaty If these countries are for it make it law in there countries as we did in ours . No need for UN treaty . I don't care what china does to chinas people , To bad so sad . Same as any other country . If they want this type of law they cam make it law . I completely against the UN 100% its a fail its a scheme and a crime against liberty, When the UN gets its one world gooberment Than they can force all peoples to do their bidding Until that Time arrives screw the UN and its member nations . We know who the Harlot is and the UN is the Beast .

I think the article is being a bit dishonest. Those that voted against it probably did so not because of hatered of the disabled but because they don't want to pass something linked with the UN.

It's time for the American people to put the Republican party out of its misery. It have become a seething mass of scum.

What would this have provided that is not already provided? Is there a specific reason you wanted this to pass or some advantage that passing this would have conferred? I haven't read it so I am honestly asking. All I see is that "It brings the rest of the world up to US standards" and it "is modeled on US law" which would imply that this, in no real way, affects disabled persons living in the US

Exactly! So it would have been a meaningless but symbolic gesture showing that America supports other countries, not only modeling itself after the US but also supports those that support the cause.

It wouldn't affect us one bit and we wouldn't lose any rights or powers like some of the ignorant have stated. Why wouldn't we sign it?

Yep and it's not a new conspiracy either. The righties are some of the most paranoid pussies I have ever seen! They are scared of their own shadow because it follows them or knows what they are doing half of the day.

From what I have read, This treaty enables the United Nations to make recommendations to other countries as to how they should accomodate their disabled citizens.

US law has no say as to what the UN can do to other countries. I think you read that wrong.

Maybe you would give a rat's ass if some of our disabled vets want to travel and hope to be accommodated in other countries!

Why not sign a treaty that says we promote handicap accommodations around the world just like we do at home?

You have to be a mental midget to think this will result in some U.N. compliance team coming to measure our handicap ramps and count the parking spaces. These Senators just need to pass a resolution explaining that they piss their pants every time they hear "U.N.".

And you have to be a self centered douchebag to not care. How nice of us to declare "We're the U.S of fuckin' A. and we don't have to give a shit about all of the other, inferior countries on the planet!
