why can't you beam it by satellite?? Direct TV beams more than 10G everyday to it's subscribers on programming. Satillite transmision is how JPL controlled the MARS ROVERS. If you live in the boonies, you will depend on Satellite for data.

Boats are not an option.
Shipping yourslelf via mail or UPS is out of the question also.

How do you do it?

ahahahah oh man you're cracking me up.

Put the data on any storage media you want.. Lets pick some..

Floppies.
Zips
digital video tapes.
Blue ray
Hard disks.
FAX it then scan it back into PC.
send an IPOD.
Send a Film.. you can carry information in the audio or video track..

Be sure to Compress.. Im sure if there is no network then you should only be dealing with raw text.. Compression should get you 3/4 of the way there.. You might be able to put more then you think on a 1.44 floppy.. I know I have copressed log files of 60mb to less then a few mb..

Setup Radio.. broadcast over shortwave..

Maybe make friends that program and make sure they know the 7 layer modle for networking.

Am I the only one wondering how this is highly technical?

Seems to be the least technical post I've ever seen in here, and I second the vote for us to be told why these options mentioned are not feasible?

Books? They contain a lot of data. Thin paper, and a really thick book could make for a fair amount of data. Not 10GB, but something.

Punch cards - that'd work too right? :D

Last idea is: carrier pigeons.

You could always use DV tapes (the camcorder variety). A standard 1hr DV tape holds 10GB uncompressed in normal mode and 15GB in LP mode. There is software that can be used to facilitate storage using camcorders that are connected via firewire. The tapes are readily available at less than $10 a pop.

What do you suggest?

Memory sticks only go to 1 Gig
Removable HD's are too expensive

What else is there?

This is getting REALLY STUPID. 10 G data. Just take the original HD out of the computer.

The hard drives, as active solutions, are much more sensitive to abuse than a passive solution (CD, DVD, tape, memory stick or something).
Also, if I can extrapolate correctly, 10 1GB memory sticks would cost more than a low size hard drive (while the hard drive will have higher capacity). The memory sticks would be much more resistant to abuse, anyway

Another idea:
Get a whole lot of model rocket engines, and strap them to a wireless router, and launch it into orbit. You wouldn't need to use the Internet either - it could be an intranet. :D
Of course, you'd need solar cells, and some batteries. But they aren't all that expensive. Throughput might not be so good though, even with just a low Earth orbit of 350 miles. Better get a parabolic reflector somewhere.

Reminds me of a joke/morality story/PHB discussion/consulant caution

The weather services tells everyone to leave the river bottom, a flood is coming. Well, the sheriff drives by this old farmer's house and tells them to evacuate. The farmer tells the sheriff, he is staying as the Lord will provide. The water starts rising and the farmer has to move up to the second floor. A boat comes by to help the farmer leave. The farmer says he is staying, the Lord will provide. The water rises more and now the farmer is on the roof. A helicopter comes to rescue the farmer. The farmer tells the helicopter he is staying as the Lord will provide. The farmer drowns. The farmer is at the gates of Heaven and is really mad that he drowned. He tells St. Peter that he had his faith and was let down. St. Peter says, "well, we sent a car, a boat, and a helicopter. What more did you want?"

Just because you don't think the solution is the most dramatic one, does not you should not use it. Some other fancy solution might not be right for you or not in the form you think it should be in.

Here, spanned DVDs are the easiest solutions. Maybe DVD-/+RW fits the bill, but plain old -+R is less than $2 a piece and fairly reliable. Blu-Ray is that miracle from above at the moment (well, so it the railgun ;) .) But tape is good too, just harder to ship in this day of security.

There are 2 methods in which this riddle can be solved.
Let me start out by asking if your boss was serious and if this question wasn't a joke? if it was a joke don't read any further, if it wasn't personally I think he was talking out of his ass however read on

Method 1:
MIT and Indiana university have developed a zip utility that has demonstrated the ability to compress 4.3Tb (Tera bytes) of data down to 2.7Gb (Giga Byte), after using the compression utility ask your boss if teleportation is an option :).

Method 2:
Print all the data on paper and ship it.

Oh and by the way the data doesn't need to be moved since it is going all the way around the world it will end where it started :) then why all the hassle

or do it the esay way. hire a wizard and tell him to magically teleport it to the exact place it started
