"My son bought this 3 days ago and It was like this when he bought it!
Me : This game is scratched, the case is obviously...
Kid : It was like that when I got it!!!"

Ask why did he buy it in the first place if it was obviously damaged to begin with............

Thats what I thought. The kid knew the game was scratched. He whined so much in the store that I put him aside and just dealt with his parents.

I even left some of the story out. There would have been much to much to type, but the child made some interesting comments like "how much is the game worth If I wanted to trade it in?"

You can just imagine how happy the father was to hear that. :)

Anyways, we'll see if they come back today. My manager completely stands by me in setting a precedent that we won't take this sh!t from customers at all.

Oh man, I brought in a brand new copy of Triple Play 2002 for Xbox to get credit at GameStop a few months back. They were a little bewildered and I hope they didn't think I stole it. I just wanted to get rid of it the easiest way. I run a Triple Play site and EA Sports sends me copies to give away was promotions. I had this one copy sitting on my desk for a month. I frequent the store so I'm guessing they believed my story.

Going back to the main subject, if parents wouldn't give their 7 year old kids $100, maybe they wouldn't buy frivolous items. The kid probably bought it, hated it then had a field day stepping on the case. Whenever I buy a something, first thing I do is check to see if it works. All my returns are usually within 24 hours unless its a hike to get to.

My only question would be if it was worth to lose the loyalty of a customer

I think the market has changed 99% of the customers have no loyalty.

I hate people like that. LIke fi the return policy is 30 days, but they bring it back 32 days and ask for a refund. WTF?! Can you not read, itson the the walls, its on the reciept, and the checkout person told you. NO, we can't make exceptions even if it is just two days. Furthermore, if you wanted any chance at all with that in the first place don't be an @ss about it but be polite and you might have a slim chance.

Exactly! I'm a CSR for a wireless company and ppl do this all the time. Its 30 days for a reason, they're always pissed because now they're "stuck" w/ the phone. I always suggest ebay.

The worst part of this whole situation is that the snot-nosed kid will have children of his own in 20 years or so. That rat saw how his parents defended him against your store - even though the child knowingly beat the CD to hell and didn't properly take care of it. This child will pass the same crap (and bad unethical habits) onto his children. Will the cycle ever end?

I don't punish my daughter with spankings. However, she does get disciplined -- and she does know a thing or two about ethics.

Radeon, you certainly have more patience, tact and professionalism than I would have demonstrated. Had I been in your shoes, I would have probably jumped over the counter to kick some serious butt - on the father and then the mother - and right in front of their snot-nosed child, too.

I hate people who raise a fuss over their own stupidity. If you lost the receipt you're outta luck unless the company does not require a receipt to return an item. Next time they come back yelling and screaming tell them to have a nice day when they leave empty handed :D =P

That really gets them. When customers are angry, they want you to get mad back. If you just smile and be obnoxiously nice the whole time, it really burns them up.

It's great, better than any TV show... :)

Being extra polite to these losers is something I learned from my mom. :) I had one customer at Taco Bell that I thought was going to have a heart attack because the meaner she was the nicer I was. When she told me that there were other Taco Bells she could go to I said "Yes ma'am there sure are. If you have a moment I can get you the addresses from the company directory to help you in finding the one closest to you." She couldn't say anything after that and just stormed out.

While a lot of customers do try to scam the store, sometimes others are victims of that scam.

True story: I bought a RAID card once from Fry's. Got home, opened it up. The manual and software was all there. The actual RAID card was nowhere to be seen! That's right, the box was empty! Imagine me trying to explain that one at the return desk without sounding like I'm trying to rip the store off.

UPDATE!

The Angry Family did not show up by the end of my shift. Sucks for them. We've had some REALLY rough customers the past couple of days and I can't tell you how much its frying my staff (even the store manager). Guess its now "the season".

Skoorb - ;)

DFI - We've had incidents like that too. I work with customers as long as they show me the same manner of professionalism that I work to convey to them.

These people were just lazy and stupid hoping to score a free copy of the game. Idiots.

wje - Trust me, I was about drained of patience after that. When customers get up in your face, you start getting the adrenaline. I would have liked to have seen them try something - I'm not the biggest guy in the world, but I'm not a wuss either.
