A rather controversial issue that's been bothering me a long time...

Why is it that in the US, where Christianity is the main religion, there is almost a complete lack of celibacy before marriage? At college right now I live with 3 christians, 1 of which is still waiting for marriage. These guys all would consider themselves very christian, but dont seem to practice it. I feel that as a non-christian I'm following more christian ideals than they are (in addition to other ideals preached by my own religion)! WHAT IS THE DEAL? I'm not an ultra-conservative but I just think things are going downhill.

EDIT: one of them even admitted that sex messes up relationships more than it helps, but he continues to behave the same.

most christians realize they are sinners
christians definition of "repentance" varies widely, many believe that forgiveness is a given, so they don't try not to sin
others at least give it a shot and sin less

I mean I realise society has changed a lot, but to call yourself a Christian shouldnt you follow its teachings? If you dont what the heck is the point of going to church? Is such a hollow act as transporting yourself to a church supposed to make things better?

Because lots of religious people are hypocritical?
Because Jesus died for their sins and the feel like they can do whatever the hell they want.

Exactly, I feel like this is complete BS and rather irreverant of their divine being.

You do realize that most Christians DON'T go to church either... 😀

I totally agree with you.

that part of religion has never been realistic.

even Mary got pregnant without being married.

Even though in the 50s and 60s people were forced to get married if they were with child? I feel like then people cared. Now its just an issue of the guy paying out some money and leaving it alone.

Did they claim to follow Christianity? Or did you one day ask what their religion is and after hearing its Christianity, somehow assumed they have to follow the teachings of said religion?

Generally, fear of death, because if you accept Christ as your savior etc, you will be granted eternal life in the kingdom of heaven.

I'm a Christian. Let me let you in on a little secret, most of us don't believe that bible crap. It's a social club of sorts. You think we're going to go to our grandparents and say we aren't Christians, or our Christian friends? Cost/Benefit.

Here's a quote from a random Roman movie by a senator when asked if he believed in the gods: "Privately I don't believe in Zeus or the gods, but publicly... I worship all of them!"

Because being a Christian is a good way to meet women. I had twocoworkers who admitted that the only reason they go to church is to meet women. Then there were these guys who were in FCA in my college who tried to slip date rape drugs into my girlfriend's roommate's drink. Luckily she caught them. Unfortunately she didn't turn them into the cops and later ran into them again at some Bible meeting.
