A rant & rave : Apple

RANT :

My sons 30GB iPod video 5G developed a hardware problem. No matter what ear buds or headphones that were plugged in ... sound would only play in the left side. Pretty strait forward hardware issue.

I get an Repair service setup through Apples web site and included in the additional info field what the hardware problem was. Apple charges me $29 to ship it to them ( this included the shipping back ). After Apple gets the iPod I get a message that no problem was found ! ... WTF !

They send it back formatted ... that's all they did !

Rave :

Fast forward to today. I make a reservation at the local Apple store for someone to look at it. Went in and with in 5 minutes I was walking out the door with a replacement with no additional charges 🙂

**Bad experience with Apple online warranty service
**Great experience with local Apple store

What? My iPod had an issue, called up Apple and they sent me a box with a pre-paid label for free. Got a new iPod within 5 business day. Paid $0.00...

Who did you piss off at Apple? 😛

the few and far between problems i have had from apple they have paid for everything. for instance, my internal speakers in my macbook last november wouldn't play for anything. turns out, apple had to replace the motherboard, processor, logic, and nearly every other wire in there. charged me zip thank science. this was under warranty, but still they did a great job of giving me the box, label, and it was a speedy turnaround.

I've had a couple friends with borked iPods, each time they were under warranty and brought it to an iPod store and got them replaced with a brand new one each and every time.

That's what I've learned from this experience. Go to the Store first.

They charged me the $29 because there was less then 6 month warranty left ( it expires in March/07 ). At least that was the reason I received from the online info I tried first. It said it was for the shipping. Oh well ...

just call them and talk to someone. im sure they will be nice enough to refund shipping since they did not fix anything.

Didn't think of that ... I'll call tomorrow ...

That's nice... if you actually have an ipod store near you.

The stores are great. My bro put his nano in the laundry (oopppss). He took it to the local Apple Store and they gave him a new one no questions asked.

Soo, Apple may, or may not, charge shipping for warranty work depending on the amount of warranty remaining? Does that sound right to you? 😕

They were great when my new iPod had a hardware problem. iPods break so often that they SHOULD have the replacement procedure down to a science.
