A Raid 0 Problem...

I'm about to make a new system for my home, and I whant to use a Raid 0 configuration. My only problem is that I don't know how to set up a Raid 0.
If you can, then please help.

First find out WHAT RAID 0 IS...look at the FAQ(Frequently asked questions)


Basically, after you read that you will know that two identical drives are required. The interface basically sends half of the data to each HD, making things go quicker(HDs don't have to deal with ALL the data.

As for the interface, you will need a RAID controller. If you are building a new system(YOu are) get a motherboard with RAID. it will have two IDE-like conectors. You plug in the two drives on different channels, and turn it on. THen you will see a bios that coressponds to the RAID controller. Go into the meny(usually press "Control + A "or "+R" and set the RAID config up. it is very simple. Basically from then on, as long as you use the supplied drivers, it will look like a drive equivalent to the storage capacity of both and with a greater speed than a single drive(not double the speed however). Remember though, if one of the drivers physically fails, you lose ALL your DATA, not JUST HALF. ALso, it is a pain in the butt to install any windows OPerating system besides win2k or XP..i.e WIn95 or 98 are out of the question for simplicity's sake.



ALso, watch out with buring 12x media at 16x. The disks go grazy, shoot out of the case, and have been know to kill on ocassion.

Eh? Win98 on an array is easier than XP (for my Promise controller, at least) - no need for drivers at install time. Everything sets up normally, and you install drivers after Windows is up and running.

As far as precise directions, there really aren't any tricks - everything is in the manual than comes with the card/mobo. Read it.... it's your friend. It wants to help you.

really?!!? Damn I'm getting old(19). I'd think the drivers on the CD would only look for onboard IDE controllers..not even scsi. Then again, I have never used a Promise RAID controller...only Highpoint and Tekram..still never installed win95 or 98 on an array or scsi.

 
Its no big deal installing a RAID 0 array on Win95/98-the os will just call it an "unknown scsi controller" or something of that nature till you install the driver after the os is installed. It will still recognize the raid array as one big disk rather than the 2 or more seperates that they really are.
 
What mobo are u going to use....do it have raid onboard or are u going to be using a addon card. All the mobos and addon cards i've seen include documention on how to set up your raid. Any probs just post another question.
