I gotta start building a new system for my lil 12 yr old brother. I can pretty much come up with a good list myself but I'd need your opinons to start me off...

budget is $800.. I prefer Athlon systems but P4 would be ok if you can convince me...

ready????? GO! ;)

Duron 1.2GHz
MSI nForce board w/integrated graphics, sound, LAN
256MB Crucial
Samsung 753DF
40GB Western Digital HD
24/10/40 CD-RW
Cheap case w/300W generic power supply
Cheapy keyboard & optical mouse

That should run you under $800

Your brother is 12. WTF is he going to use it for, SVCD encoding?

(I have mutiple threads at GenMay.com referencing my arduous SVCD encoding of Buffy DVD rips...14 episodes total, about 60 hours spent from start to finish.

unless you're building a high end system... i'd go with a dell.

they make great little cheap PC's, and its a hell of a lot easier on you, and they come with a warranty and tech support.

Another vote on getting a Dell, here's what I got for $592 shipped:

Dell Dimension 4500
P4 1.8
512MB RAM (bought 128 from Dell and another 2x256 from Best Buy for $60 after rebates)
40GB
16x DVD
24x CD-RW
Keyboard/mouse
Windows XP Home

Don't ask how I got it for $592 since "dell is such a POS........."

Duron? You realize you can get an XP 1500 for $20 more, right?

Pricewatch lists some bottom-basement prebuilt systems for under $500, but most are integrated (shared video memory, integrated sound), may use motherboards with limited PCI slots, and it's a bit of a crapshoot as to whether the price of a flavor of Windows OS is included.

Here's a quick barebones setup that I pieced together from mwave.com:

AB01-B205-14-5-A12910-A14331- AMD ATHLON & DDR SYSTEMS
1.44MB FDD
(ABIT NV7-133R-Specs; AMD ATHLON XP 1800+; 512MB NON-ECC PC2100; ACER 56X CDROM-Specs; ENLIGHT 7250) $391.80 $391.80

A16810 IBM 40GB UATA-100 #35L040AVVN07 DESKSTAR 120GXP 7200RPM 2MB P/N# 07N8450 (Bare drive) Detail Specs *limited 2pcs per customer $69.00 $69.00

A13770 MS NATURAL ELITE PS2 KEYBOARD BUNDLE WITH INTELLIMOUSE PS2 (DSP)Must be Purchased w/Hardware! $29.00 $29.00

270269 LABTEC PULSE 420 25WATT 3-PC SPEAKER SYSTEM Detail Specs $28.97 $28.97

A02640 VIEWSONIC 17" E70F .25 1280X1024 FLAT SCREEN Detail Specs $151.20 $151.20

Sub Total $669.97

Shipping would be another $50 or so. If you need an OS, you can get an OEM copy of Windows XP Home with the system for $89.

The key to keeping the price low is the NForce motherboard, which comes with a bunch of good integrated components. You can spend the extra money on a better monitor, or on a better video card. I'd recommend a GeForce 4 Ti4200, but an ATI Radeon 9000 Pro would work for under $140, too.
