A QUICK Q: How to change file extension?

How do I only to change a file's extension? (not converting)

If I were to change the extension of an mp3 file by rename it to xxx.mid, then the name just turns into xxx.mid(.mp3), preserving the mp3 extension. How do I change?

Not a confusing question, but to the OP, that's not the way you want to change a file type.

Changing the extension doesn't do anything except confuse Windows and make you (probably) end up using the wrong program to open a given file.

mp3 files aside, I have found by changing the extension from .wps to .doc, word actually encodes the file correclty, and opens it as it should.

When operating systems start encorporating a real-time conversion process upon an extension change, then that will be good times, my friend, very good times. Until then you need a program to make the conversion. Something like this.

If you want to just change the extension but keep the file in mp3 format... then just go to Tools > Folder Options > View > Uncheck "Hide extension names for known file types". Then select the file, hit F2, and name it something.midi.

for some fvcked up reason, merely changing a .mp3 extension to .mid allows my phone to play it as ringtone.
