Hi,

I am thinking of getting a XP1900 Palomino OEM, which mean it won't come with a heatsink. For the heatsink, I will get the Alpha 8045. My question is this: Is the Alpha 8045 all I need, or will I need a fan and thermal material as well? Does the thermal material come with the Alpha 8045 when buy it? If not, which thermal material do you recomment? It would be very helpful if someone would list all the components I need so I wouldn't burn my CPU, hehe =).

TIA,
CJ <-- newbie =)

Man you really are a newbie :D ...

Yes u'll need to put a Therma material... ArticSilver II is the best out there... and it won;t come with 8045 ;)
And even if you are not overclocking.. you need fan .. Panaflo 80mm... ~30CFM should be good enough.. idle around ~30C

If u r into overclocking.. then you need one of those screamers.. high CFM Deltas or YSTechs..

Get this:
1. Alpha 8045.
2. ArticSilver II
3. Panaflo 80mm ~30 CFM fan...
and your CPU will live forever...

the pal8045 does come with a blister pack of silcon compound... but arctic silver is better if you want to spend the 10 bucks... i am for my 8045
i would recommend something inbetween the 30cfm and 68cfm previously referenced, sunon makes a nice 50cfm fan that can be had for 8 bucks from 2cooltek.com

I chose the Sunon 40cfm on mine (set up to exhaust air away from the heatsink) It works great.

I don't think you should expect to idle at 30C though. Usually room temperature runs around 27 or 28 and you should expect about a 9 or 10 degree rise above that with a VERY good job of mounting.

Bottom line, the better your case is ventilated, the less you have to worry about "maxing out" on the HS fan.

Thermal compound is a MUST! (I like the Arctic Silver II) you can find it on line pretty easily (I think I got mine from 3DCool.com)
