i would never insult my parents... not only would i get knocked on my azz, but it would really say a lot more about the type of person i am, over whether they deserved it or not.

i grew up in an italian/swedish brooklyn, NY household. i flipped my father the bird once, and my mom floored me. that was the first and last time. i am 42yrs old now and my parents are in their 70's and i can affirm that if i did it now, i would get floored just the same.

Raising VeggieFrog... there was the 3D rule...

if she messed up, or broke something or did something stupid... there would be discussions and appropriate punishment. but if she was Disrespectful, Disobedient or Defiant... i would bubble her ass. She got spanked about 5 times in her entire life. she is 21yrs old now and would never, ever disrepect me... no matter how annoying i can get.

:)

Nope, never would. I've gotten pissed at my mom while growing up and said things that I didn't mean at the time, sure, but never actually in her presence. Now I'm at the point where, as another poster mentioned, my parents and I speak to one another as "normal adults." However, I still treat my mother with more respect than I would just about anyone else.

And all this without ever being spanked past kindergarden.

have you been watching Indian stand-up comedians lately? Like it has been said before, it isn't a "white" thing, more of a Dr. Spock North American attitude to raising children.

yeah thats true...i was brought up in india and most of the nonsense that kids do nowadays i wouldnt have even thought of doing...

Just like that call them stupid? No, I may think it sometimes when they get really stubborn or something, but I would never call them that, I would just mumble something incomprehensible instead as a sign of utter frustration, but I just can't call them that. They are parents after all.

In response to OP statement that it's usually white ppl who talk disrespectfully about parents you should have heard this black girl about a year ago at a bus stop at my university. As I undestand her dad was supposed to pick her up, but he got lost and she was late for work. She was yelling loudly on cellphone, at first she tried giving him directions, but then gave up and just started cursing him. I can't think of a word she didn't use. And that's at a bus stop full of people, everyone heard everything she said, and it's not like she was particularly keen at keeping it quiet, she literally yelled in her cellphone. Then she hung up and called her mom, complaining how bad her dad is, how dumb he is not to find the bus stop. Damn. How did her parents let her get to that point? If it was me I would just boot her out of my house. That was seriously wrong.

yes i said thats its not just white people, but at least from what i've seen, white people do it more than others...my roommates call their moms 'retard' and 'bitch' quite a bit.

I did, once, while on vacation, and found myself hugging the wall rather abruptly. I kept my language clean since then.

or some other derogatory term?

Something I've noticed in my many years living with asian, indian, white and black roommates is that white people talk to their parents with much less respect than others(NO RACISM INTENDED...I'M JUST POINTING OUT A TREND THAT I HAVE NOTICED...EMPHASIS ON I). I know speaking for myself that my mom would have smacked the sh1t out of me if i talked like that to her (i'm indo).

it's not because they're white, it's because their parents are following the "don't hit your kids" policy that was started at the beginning of our generation. I was belted and smacked when I was a kid, and that saved me. anyone who wasn't was needlessly spoiled and not disciplined properly and consequently, talking smack to your parents is the result. darn those parents

Exactly. Which is what I pointed out in one of the 360 threads, parents are incapable of telling their children no. Anyone who spends 700-1000 dollars so their kid can have the 360 which retails at a third of that......
No wonder kids have the problems they do.

the way the pole is written, nothing can be inferred. what you should have done is for example south asian & yes, south asian & no. Sometimes I feel my folks don't understand me, but that's because I'm 2nd generation here. So that's kinda to be expected.

Both of my parents are college educated people with very high positions in the military. I'm gonna have to go with no.
