or some other derogatory term?

Something I've noticed in my many years living with asian, indian, white and black roommates is that white people talk to their parents with much less respect than others(NO RACISM INTENDED...I'M JUST POINTING OUT A TREND THAT I HAVE NOTICED...EMPHASIS ON I). I know speaking for myself that my mom would have smacked the sh1t out of me if i talked like that to her (i'm indo).

My parents deserve my respect and they get it, but I joke around with them like I would anyone else.

No to my mom. She takes everything very seriously. With my dad we joke around a lot and he doesnt care, even if i curse at him, because its all in good humor and nothing is taken away from it. Heck, my dad still goes to shows with me and everyone calls him the coolest dad on the block.

I've gotten into alot of arguments with my father. It seems like every other day we start something. Even with that, all it is is alot of comments regarding what we are talking about, but nothing besides calling each other dense, silly, or thick-headed.

it's not because they're white, it's because their parents are following the "don't hit your kids" policy that was started at the beginning of our generation. I was belted and smacked when I was a kid, and that saved me. anyone who wasn't was needlessly spoiled and not disciplined properly and consequently, talking smack to your parents is the result. darn those parents

Exactly.

When a person does feel like calling their Mother or Father stupid concerning one area of expertise, I'm sure they (the parents) know much more in other areas. One example of this is the following:

My parents know how to use a computer, but still ask some very basic, rudimentary questions sometimes. It does get frustrating always having to answer what I perceive as a common knowledge question, and I may feel like calling them stupid, or ignorant, but I never would. Why? Because of the "stupid" questions I ask my Dad about electrical and plumbing or about my car, and gardening questions I ask my mother.

You're on the money with the whole disciplining thing, but disciplining a child doesn't necessarily mean hitting or spanking a child.

not necessarily, i was disciplined as a kid but when my mom absolutely deserved it, i told her what was on my mind... but if your parents screwed you financially, i think you'd most likely do the same...

Father's dead, but I've called him worse. Mom's not dead yet and I haven't called her anything worse than she's called me -but that isn't saying much.

Growing up I didn't... once I hit 18 I started to joke around with them a bit more. Our family does stuff like that. Now, at 22, my parents and I dish it out all the time and we counter-attack. It's all in good fun. No one gets upset/offended because we never mean it.

I don't, because neither is; but I'd do so if the situation called for it. I respect my parents, because they are respectable people, and appreciate all that they did and continue to do on my behalf; but I don't adopt the idea that they are magically immune to all criticism. I treat them, with regard to respect, at least, the same as I would treat other human; but generally respectable figures: teachers, professors, colleagues, real friends, etc.

once my dad found my stash of fifths behind my futon, he's been really cool with me. So that was like the doorway to being a man in his book. most parents would pour them down the drain, my dad just laughed and started letting me hang with him at bars and stuff. :p that was when I started joking around with the 'rents

Exactly. I'm still their son, but they talk to me just like they would any other adult. It's really a lot better than if they yelled at me for dropping a curse word or what not all the time. That's just ridiculous to do, especially when you hit the "you're an adult" age. Looking back, I wouldn't change anything my parents did to raise me. In fact, ill probably raise my future kids like my parents raised me. It seems to work. :)

Im white and it is true, alot of us talk to our parents with less respect then other ethnic people. But I also noticed, that although some hispanic/black people I know will be very respectful, they will do things behind their parents back to make them cringe whereas the trash talking white kid will still be a goody 2 shoes with an attitude problem.

"someones gonna a getta hurt real bad!"
/Russel Peter's impersonation

have you been watching Indian stand-up comedians lately? Like it has been said before, it isn't a "white" thing, more of a Dr. Spock North American attitude to raising children.

Never.

Respect for one's parents should be a fundamental part of any society. The one's who don't respect their parents enough can't respect anyone else either.
