A question about Tivo

I was reading an article about electronics for Christmas. The last few sentences about Tivo said that you could still use Tivo without paying for a subscription. Of course, you couldn't take advantage of all the functions but you could still record. I guess you would use it like a vcr. Does anyone know anything about this?

I believe only series 1 units can, series 2 i believe are as good as a doorstop w/o service.

You can have Tivo with NO FEES good luck finding a unit though
